    it was a dumb idea

ipads often leave the house, making it a very bad choice for a home hub.

HomePods, HomePods mini, and Apple TVs are much better choices. And
other than a few trolls, no one is going to notice.

    It's a non-feature, not a non-benefit

I guess nobody knows why as Apple isn't saying based on what macrumors.com
said when the they ended their story with this possible explanation of why.

The company has not explained why the iPad will no longer function as a
home hub, but it could be related to Apple's upcoming cross-platform Matter smart home standard implementation.

Do you think Matter smart home standard implementation might be involved?

there's nothing to explain because the reason is obvious.

an ipad is the second worst possible choice (an iphone would be first)
for a *home* hub because it's a *portable* device that will often leave
    home with its owner.

Do you think Matter smart home standard implementation might be involved?

    no.

And it is a device that is not constantly powered on, or connect to
power, so it is inherently unreliable as a home hub anyway.

Do you think Matter smart home standard implementation might be involved?

    no.

There's an outside chance that Matter requires a powered source, I
    suppose.

It was macrumors who surmised it had to do with the timing of Matter.

    https://www.consumerreports.org/smart-home/matter-smart-home-standard-faq-a9475777045/
The first version of Matter has been delayed a few times, but it's
currently set to launch in the fall of 2022.

They mention the ipad when they said

Matter allows you to control devices from multiple smart home systems at
the same time through its Multi-Admin feature. That means you could turn on your lights from the SmartThings app on a Samsung smartphone, dim them by asking Alexa on an Echo speaker, and then turn them off from the Apple Home
    app on an iPad.

That mentioned a wireless standard called Thread I'd never heard of before.
Are you aware if the iPad will support Thread in iOS 16?

that's something which has been possible on ios via homekit, which was initially released in 2014, *eight* *years* *ago*.

iot devices can be controlled via apple's home app as well as numerous
third party homekit apps. note that the manufacturer's own app is not
needed, which is usually not very good (and that's being generous).

it's also one of the many things that cannot be done on android, at
    least until matter is released.

ios (and its variants) have supported thread for a couple of years and
the homepod mini and most recent apple tv are thread border routers.
