• Can't connect to E-S on Port 563 with IoS

From John Hill@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jun 9 10:13:55 2022
    XPost: comp.lang.tcl, comp.lang.tcl, eternal-september.support

NewsTap on my iPad and my iPhone no longer connect with eternal September on Port 563 (SSL); I get a connection failure dialog. When I look at the NewsTap log, I find:

    NewsTap Log

    08:33:55 Server #0: reader.eternal-september.org
    08:33:56 S0:
    08:33:56 C0: AUTHINFO USER Boffin
    08:33:56 C0: MODE READER

    And that's it.

If I change to Port 119 and turn off SSL, I get:

    NewsTap Log

    08:35:12 Server #0: reader.eternal-september.org

Which is what I would expect when there is nothing to download. When there is something, it downloads in OK.

I don't know how long this has been the case, but probably since the last IoS/iPos update.

I have no problems with Port 563 on my iMac, using Usenapp, so it's nothing to do with my network.

I'm perfectly happy to leave the iPad and iPhone on Port 119 (I presume SSL confers some benefit, but I'm too ignorant the know what).

But I'd like to know if there is a fix, and also if anyone else sees this.

Please note that I'm posting this to comp.mobile.ipad and to eternal-september.support.

    John.

Have you contacted NewsTap's developer. As I recall, he's been pretty responsive in the past.

I’m using NewsTap now with SSL ticked and the port set to 563 on my IPad
Mini 5 running iPadOS 16 beta. Seems to be no problem now. I note that selecting SSL in NewsTap does not automatically change the port setting. I think my earlier post about there being a problem with Usenapp was
incorrect as it seems to be working OK now with SSL / port 563. So I’m
left wondering if there was a short period problem with e-s.

Yes, and he spotted the problem from the logs. Reader.eternal… returns an error, news.eternal… does not; change server, and all is well. But it
seemed to need a reset of all NGs.

    would have noticed.
