Dislike the Multitasking/Split View "features" but can't find a way to
    remove them...

You can simply not use them (although sometimes it happens by accident!).

    Otherwise, if you're using iPadOS 14 ...

If you want to fully disable a split-screen view
on your iPad, you have to follow these steps:

    1. Go to the "Settings" app on your iPad.
    2. After that, tap "Homescreen & Dock".
    3. Then, in the "Multitasking" section,
    switch off "Allow Multiple Apps".

If you're using iPadOS 15, then stupidly it can't be disabled, but it
is supposedly easier to control ...

Key to accessing and controlling multi-tasking
is the small "three-dot" button that is found at
the top-centre edge of the screen.

Thanks. Hopefully they'll restore the ability to kill it in the next
    upgrade.

Not sure what rocket scientist/feature-bloat add-it-because-you-can
software designed decided that multiple tasking/split views on a small
    screen was useful...

Agree. I hate it with a loathing. I have no need for it, don't want it and frequently trigger it by accident.
