Does my sister count? I bought her one a couple of years back but she
never managed to log in to it.

I bought it for her because the mapping functionality on a phone
screen while excellent is just too fucking small some of the time and
trying to read turns off of a roundy-thing is bloody dangerous. I
wanted her to be able to see things larger. iPads may not be "real"
computers but the one I sent her does have a larger screen than a
    phone.

In spite of several emails typed in very short words, linkies to
Apple's support pages and some phone calls, she hasn't managed to get
    it to run.

Whoever invented the "Just works" propaganda never met her.

Anyway, I suspect that as she has never activated the SIM, the mobile
phone number has probably been expired by the provider and resold to
some other bugger and a replacement SIM is, per Apple's standing
operating policies, probably not possible as it's probably welded onto
    the motherboard.

Just to get the point out of the way: no, I haven't been able to set
it up for her, Winnie's Flu in 2020 and 2021 rather fucked up that
    option.

She could have sent it to me for setting up but she hasn't an
probably won't ever. [shrug], it's her box. If she doesn't want to use
it then there's fuck all I can do.

By now, it's even money she's lost the charger and any accessories or instruction leaflets that came in the box [not that those would help
her]. She does tend to be extremely careless with stuff I give her.

So, while she "has" one, it's never going to run.

Are you doing an OU course survey or something? If so, I'd be quite
interested in knowing into which slot Idiot Sister goes?

Wait. iPads can do voice phones like iPhones? I don't see a Phone icon
in this old iPad air (iOS v12.5.5) from early 2015.

cellular capable ipads have a sim (sometimes esim, depending on model),
which if activated, will get a data-only phone number. nothing expired
nor does its sim need to be replaced. he's confused, as is his sister.

You should not be looking at the screen for more than a fraction of a
second anyway, this is why the phone gives audio queues (and very good
ones like "Not at this light, but at the next light, turn right"
followed by a second prompt as you get to the second light.

In spite of several emails typed in very short words, linkies to

That is very strange. Does she have other learning problems? I've never
seen anyone who was confused about the basic operation of an iPad. Setup
is a few clear guided steps and using it is literally tapping things
with your finger. It's certainly simpler than using the stove, a coffee
maker, a can opener, driving a car, or setting a table.

Ah I see, you are n idiot troll moron. I apologize for trying to talk to
you like you were an actual person.

    buh-bye.

    no.

I assumed the "cellular data" or mobile phone account was on a SIM so
she could do mapping while out driving.

it does use a sim, but it's data only. mapping uses data, so no issues
    there.

    OU?

Open University. A sort of distributed house of higher learning in
UKland. Done mostly by post and TV programmes. The last time I
checked, it was free, at least for me.

I got an iPad mini with cellular long time ago then got a newer one few years ago. I used to have a free TMobile data plan but they stopped that but mostly I got that iPad b'cuz it has GPS. Its great for travelling and other stuff. Sometimes we drive in
the mountains where there's no cell towers. We have a map app so that with the GPS works great. It's $150 more I think its worth it. I don't want to pay a lot for a cell plan so if I need the iPad to talk to the Internet when it's away from WiFi I
hotspot thru my iPhone but usually then I'd just use the iPhone anyway unless I need a bigger screen. But I'm glad for the GPS I do use that.

An iPad can be easily synced with an iPhone, and serve as a transceiver.
