Just a note to point out that iOS and iPadOS 15 have expanded the
settings for Do Not Disturb and removed any previous settings for this function.

I wish the Do Not Disturb function also silenced the tone that happens
when the iPhone charger is connected.

So as to be nice to the battery, I don't want my phone to be charging
up throughout the entire night. The charger is connected to a timer
which turns on at 4am each morning, but the tone is sometimes enough
to wake me up. When Do Not Disturb is on I don't want any noise from
the phone at all unless I explicitly set it on.

iphones are smart enough so that they don't do any harm
to the battery if you start charging when you go to bed.

The charger is connected to a timer which
turns on at 4am each morning, but the tone
is sometimes enough to wake me up.

You don't have to charge it on the bedside.

Tho its certainly safer to do that in case you have
a stroke or heart attack or something while in bed.

When Do Not Disturb is on I don't want any noise
from the phone at all unless I explicitly set it on.

But others may well turn do not disturb on before
charging and need to be sure it is charging.

    Not really.

But I mostly use the audible signal with the much more convenient
magnetic plug in charger to check that it has connected properly.

So remember to set the volume to minimum BUT you must also remember to
turn it back up in the AM.

Alternative is to place a soft cloth so speakers are muted while in charger.

Her Samsung must be very, very old. If she does not want to change it is pointless to mention it here. IIRC "Do not disturb" was implemented in
Android 8 or 9 IIRC. We stand at 12 now.

For your Mom it would be much healthier to completely shut down the
    phone during her bedtime.

It's a new button. There's no point in changing what is already working perfectly well simply for the sake of changing it.

The battery setting says "To reduce battery ageing, iPhone learns from
