• Software Update Failed. 16.5.1

From Ed Cryer@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jun 30 12:54:25 2023
I somehow interrupted the download of this Update and now it won't
install. I've restarted several times but I still get "Software Update
Failed. An error occurred downloading iPadOS 16.5.1".
    It's an iPad Pro.

I had this exact problem a while back. The above steps fixed it.

That contains a large list of apps, but I can't find this OS update. The
only viable candidates are two entries right at the end; iPadOS 8.33 GB
and System Data 9.2 GB. But both of those open when tapped to nothing
    tappable, no sub-items.

Then perhaps it's not even able to download it.

Try rebooting the WiFi router to which you are connected. Or try
connecting to a different router. Reboot the iPad, and then try again.

Well, I finally got the thing updated; but it was rather a tortuous
route. I'll detail the steps here for the help of others, and for the
possible explanation from people more familiar with iOS than I am.

I rebooted the router, rebooted the iPad, tried again; same problem, no
change. Nota bene that my router flushes all buffers on a reboot.
I decided to try an update through iTunes on the Windows PC by cable
that this iPad syncs to. It started ok, downloaded, started "preparing
to update ..." then displayed "The iPad cannot be synced. An unknown
error occurred (-54)". I clicked OK and the app continued. It cycled
through all kinds of wondrous events but eventually ended. And the iPad
is fine, fully updated, fully functional.
