    If there are people willing to operate the servers and get money for
    running the registry, I assume it will continues to exist.


    Of course it will not cease to exist. There is loads of money involved so
    rest assured that a government, non-profit or for-profit will be able to
    snatch the rights to it, and continue to earn money on nothing.

    Yeah, there are way too many popular sites and tech things hosted on .io
    for it to be shut down.

    Simple solution. Mauritius declares the islands the Mauritius Indian Ocean Territory with the ISO 3166 country code IO. They are happy because the .io domain revenue goes to them, and everyone with a .io domain is happy. The
    only one unhappy is the shady guy who happens to get the .io revenue today: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.io

    That works for things like the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (ISO code TF, TLD .tf), permanent population 0.
