Lots of tech/geek-oriented sites have been registering domains in the “.io” top-level country domain (ccTLD). This represents the British Indian Ocean Territory. Trouble is, as Britain hands over the Chagos
Islands to Mauritius, this Territory will no longer exist. And the
usual consequence of this is that the corresponding ccTLD is deleted
as well.

Think about other domains like .su - they also still exist, even if the
state doesn't exist anymore.

.cs (the former Czechoslovakia) and .yu (ditto Yugoslavia) both seem
to have completely disappeared.
