• USENET: killfiles

    From John McCue@21:1/5 to All on Thu Sep 7 23:52:12 2023
    Hi all,

    I finally bit the bullet and decided to kill all google
    group posts. This is due to massive spam in comp.lang.c
    that has shown up in the past few days.

    As a tin user, it took me a bit to figure it out :)
    In tin to kill posts from google groups, add this to
    ~/.tin/filter

    group=*
    case=0
    score=kill
    msgid_last=*<*@googlegroups.com>*

    Maybe people can add to this for other clients :)

    HTH this helps people using tin.

    Back in the day - 2002 or so?* - there was this dude Blinky the Shark
    whose "Usenet Improvement Project" collected the necessary info to
    block GoogleGroups no matter which Usenet client you used. He died
    around 2012 or so as I recall, but someone keeps his info alive.

    The info for TIN is here. Slightly different than your approach but there's more than one way to get what you want I'm sure:

    *Take all my dates with a grain of salt. Not worth being more precise
    and too tired/lazy to look it up.

    Thanks for the reminder, that is/was a great site.
    But sadly that option no longer works for tin :)

    IIRC, how tin filters posts was rewritten somewhere between
    now and that page was last updated. I submitted feedback
    on the page in case he wants to update it.

    Regards

    Sadly the page is returning 404 on submit :(

    Just a note that if wildcard=1 in ~/.tin/tinrc (not default), I
    believe Tin will expect regular expressions instead of the
    wildmat form that you've used.
