• Any Tor-friendly e-mail providers?

I'm one of those people that use Tor for anonymity reasons. The problem
is that you cannot register your accounts pretty much anywhere if you
    don't provide your e-mail address.

Secmail.pro used to be great but it has been down for a while and all
the services (gmail, yahoo) require a phone number to register. Are
there any Tor-friendly e-mail providers that don't require a phone
    number to register account with?

No idea about TOR-friendly*, but Yandex didn't require a phone
number when I made an account with them - I used a fake name. They
suggest adding one on the account page though, so I don't know if
they might force you provide one for new accounts these days.

    * You could try connecting to their IMAP server at imap.yandex.com
just to see whether it lets you in far enough that you _could_
log in if you had an account:
    telnet imap.yandex.com 143

What about riseup.net? I haven't used them but they say they have
onion services. Oh, looks like it's invite only now due to abuse.

Not unless something has changed recently. I did not have to provide one.

they do when they suspect some level of fraud.

for most people, its not required.

on the other hand, if someone is doing something suspicious, such
trying to create several accounts while connecting via a vpn, there's a
very good chance it will ask for additional verification.

many sites do something similar. some sites block vpns entirely.

Tutanota is another option similar to ProtonMail. Pretty sure no phone
    number is required during registration.

If you're really concerned about using Tor. Here's the best option:

Create a VM on Sporestack. Pay with Monero. Create your own mail server.
I suggest mailinabox. I don't *think* it has a callhome feature, but you
can always check on that yourself if you're interested.
