• Direct communication with scanners, anybody?

I have the impression that communication with scanners/printers
    is far too complicated.
My brother knows postscript right out of the box.
Dumping a postscript file via a socket should be enough.

Using SANE is a far too complicated. There is an underlying protocol
that is apparently negotiated among scanner manufacturers.
Experimenting with Forth is probably enlightening.
    Has anybody done that?

Text mode in case of printers isn't complicated; you know:
it's all about sending proper Epson/IBM/HPCL control code,
    nothing that sophisticated.
As for Postscript (which is very Forth-like) your brother will
be able to tell you more. ;)
