• Ann: 8th 22.05 released

From Ron Aaron@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 28 22:10:02 2022
This is mostly a bug-fix version, with a few enhancements thrown in for fun.

    Full details here:

Actually it wouldn't hurt to list in the FAQ all the differences „8th vs 4th”.

Hmm. I had thought the manual had a section on that, but it doesn't.

    You did:

If you're familiar with Forth, then you should know that 8th is not as
similar to other Forths as you might like. The main differences are:

All data items are strongly typed, and occupy one cell on the stack
You have no access to hardware except through 8th. No assembler words
    (this may change)
No "create ... does>" (although recently a word c/does was added)
Uses JSON syntax to define data
Has many higher-level data constructs such as maps and queues and arrays

IOW similar in name only :)

    A few more:

8th isn't an event. There is no Euro8th, committees, video meetings, seminars,
training, book sales, nor anyone to pass the buck. On the negative it has a
forum inviting user participation. You can make a donation (non tax-deductible).

So when I read a manual, then I get the answer like: „You didn't even bother to
read README, where it is clearly described...” etc — and when I read README/FAQ
    I'm being redirected to manual.
    Poor me.

Do I give you answers like that? I hope not; at least, I try not to do that.
