• OT: Google sanctioned with UDP

From dxf@21:1/5 to All on Sat Oct 21 11:40:40 2023
If you're not seeing posts originating from google-groups it may be as
a result of your news server having imposed a UDP (Usenet Death Penalty)
on Google for failing to act on spam, in particular illicit drug peddling.

Can't find anything on this with a Google search.

    Are you surprised? :)

Thinking it was just a technical glitch, I contacted the NNTP service
(Ausics) who advised they and several other providers had taken the
action after numerous complaints to Google had come to naught. In
their announcement Ausics stated they had a duty under Law not to
allow their service to be used for illicit activity.

No UDP for Google groups as I see the continuing tide of spam

Below is the Ausics announcement. Doubtless other NNTP services
participating in the ban will have advised their uses.

    From: noel <deletethis@invalid.lan>
    Subject: googlegroups UDP
    Newsgroups: ausics.announce
    Date: 14 Oct 2023 01:33:11 +1000

google has failed to act upon multiple complints by multiple NNTP
services over past 7 months, they have ignored and done nothing, trhe
problem has in fact got much much worse, it's out of control, as such a
UDP has been called for on google, it has bee accepted and initiated by
several NNTP providers, I have resisted but as of 0100 14 Oct 23 I too
    have now UDP'd google.

This UDP on googlegroups will be revised in 90 days, but since a large
number of usenet admins have been strongly complaining to google for many
many months, I don't see anything changing, google either thing they are
too big to block (big mistake), or simply don't care.

I have a duty under Law to not permit drug dealers to use my service, the
    ban is now in effect.

services. It's probably very tedious, or even unwinnable, to constantly watch and try to stop everything.

comp.os.msdos.djgpp has also been under deluge these past few days.

Google-groups has an obligation to police its end of Usenet. Their
failure to do so has resulted in other providers boycotting them.
To do nothing would guarantee the end of Usenet.

That won't happen. If GG or the peering servers don't act, bandwidth
used for spam is not the bottleneck today and filtering away all GG
    posts is easy.

But I'd miss some digital neighbours if the last line of defence would
be unconditionally dropping all GG posts on my end. Fine tuned
filtering is not a permanent option. Currently I only filter the Thai
spam and everything else is handled manually.

So how can we nudge the GG users to switch their Usenet provider?

For getting this answered I'd be willing to bear this spam tsunami some
more weeks. But there will be a day when I start to drop everything
    from GG unread. 2024-01-01?

And yet eternal-september and other Usenet servers manage to delete
this spam coming through Google (and they would not have to if Google

Ok. I don't check mail much anymore, and found this. Just reported 60.
Google filters all spam on email, even the stuff you sign up for sometimes,

Usenet providers had been approaching Google for months (if not years) to do something about the spam originating from GG. According to an email I received these providers have been applying filters but it's a never-ending game of whack-a-mole as spammers workaround the filters.

They could be making a packet out of this, but even YouTube looks good compared to this.

You're suggesting GG spewing spam into Usenet for other providers to clean up is a tactic to monetize it? I wouldn't put it past them :)
