• End of Coyote's Guide to IDL Programming

From David Fanning@21:1/5 to All on Wed Dec 6 08:42:12 2017
    Hi Folks,

It has taken me a LONG time to write this post. I've found it almost impossible to give up 25 years of the best job on the planet. I have so many wonderful memories of this group and of learning about IDL together. But the time has come for me to put
Coyote's Guide to IDL Programming to bed.

I'll be taking down the Coyote's Guide to IDL Programming web page at the end of January, 2018.

If anyone is interested in the web page, or in taking over responsibility for the Coyote Library programs, please contact me. I get enough e-mails that I suspect it still has some value to a small (and decreasing) IDL population. If you have contacted me
before about this and I have ignored you, I am sorry. It has been too painful for me to think about and I preferred denial to action. Please contact me again. First come, first served.

Again, thank you so much for the many, many wonderful friends I made in this community, for supporting me by scheduling IDL classes and by buying my books. My kids got wonderful educations because of you! I am grateful to each and every one of you who
participated and contributed to this wonderful IDL community.

My very best to all of you,

    David Fanning

Hi David, it's been great working with you. Your IDL programs have been a lesson to me, and I think the IDL world. Stay in touch.

    Dear David,

also from my side, thank you so much for all what you've done or the IDL community and to Coyote for his non-negligible contribution to my PhD ;)

As a PostDoc I have made the transition to Python (the Enemy!) and I
don't regret it; but I don't regret the 5 years I spent using IDL and
the Coyote Libraries either - I learned a lot!

I think that your website should stay up though, and I hope someone will
    take over...

    Best,

    Fabien

    Hi David,

IDL is slowly dying... The group is super polluted with spam and now David's web site will be down. I can't believe it!

I've been an IDL programmer for the last 10 years and the Coyote's web page has always been a a good reference. I sill read some of the articles when I don't find a solution to a problem. Actually, when I Google an IDL question I type:
    IDL coyote 'my question'

And I get an answer almost all the time...
David, I think that your web page should be available for some years more or, at least, make the content available somewhere. I am definitely interested!

Apart from that! Thank you very much for your contribution, code, etc. I (we) miss you!

    Hi David,

Thank you for all of your work. Your website was (and still is) a very valuable resource for me during my phd and subsequent postdocs. Your website as always the first place I looked if I had any problems. I cannot emphasize how much time and effort you
have saved me, and how much I have learned from your website along the years.

    Best wishes,
    Owen

For some reason, I did not get David's post -- do not understand
why it got filtered. Anyway, .....

I too wish the site continues to live ... and grow.

I came to Coyote via PV-Wave in the early 90s. Without
Coyote, the webste and the Guide, I would never been able to
unlock much of the power of the software. Till management
decided not the renew the license, Coyote was a weekly "go to"
in my group. Many thanks to David for all his contributions.

As PV-Wave still seems to be kicking around, perhaps there may
be some interest on that side to pick up the website?

Having retired myself, I understand David's desire to move on.
But, there is much that is valuable, and irreplaceable, on the site
and I really do wish that it does not disappear without trace.

Once again, thanks to David for all the help, hints and
    education. Happy trails.

    David,

Thanks for your long service to the IDL community, not only in your role as an IDL trainer back in the RSI days but more importantly, as a strong advocate for IDL. Even though we sometimes disagreed about the best graphics system (function graphics, by
the way!), your website and contributions to comp.lang.idl-pvwave were always immensely valuable.

Best of luck in the future!

    Cheers,

Your web site as saved mu butt many times over the past decades searching for solutions to my IDL problem. It would be sad to see this valuable memory go away. I would gladly take a copy of the entire website as a keep-sake. :-) All the best to you.

    Cheers,
