This is corporate bullying as high art.
Fact is, floor-planning workers in expensive areas is a large part of
the expense. Anybody who works effectively, from a remote location,
saves the company significant amounts of money. And there is a wider
effect than just the desk and chair that is gone, but also incremental
benefits of less air conditioning, electricity, consumables in kitchens
and bathrooms etc. that really work at scale.
I worked for an enlightened company in the 1990s where all the employees
were remote. All the tech staff was spread out across the country. They
ran the numbers and it made sense, and they saved millions of dollars a
year. Headquarters was in Washington D.C. in a very fancy and expensive
area, but the office was basically just a few admins and some execs.
IBM pulled a similar stunt years ago when they opened a data center in
Iowa. That way they were able to fire a large number of people or give
them the choice to work in India at Indian wages or to go to Iowa and
make 40 dollars an hour for work they were getting paid 100-150 and hour
before that.
Those selfish CEOs ought to be reducing their own salaries and giving
bonuses and raises to people who work remotely. It's a win-win. If your
staff doesn't perform then fire them; otherwise trust them and enable
them to pick the work arrangement where they will be the most productive.
