    Hi docdwarf@panix.com,

Why say that "Please do your own job."?
What do you do in this group anyway?

If you don't want to help people, be silent.
Close your mouth and don't talk nonsense.
What do you do in this world of good?
I don't think it does anything.

    Hi docdwarf@panix.com,

Why say that "Please do your own job."?

I say that because I am trying to be polite.

What do you do in this group anyway?

Research in the archive might answer that question. Please do your own homework.

If you don't want to help people, be silent.

Doing someone else's job or homework is not always helpful.

Close your mouth and don't talk nonsense.

There is a difference bettween saying 'I do not see the sense' and 'this
is nonsense' that a good mind can learn.

What do you do in this world of good?

There are people who gleefully assassinate those who ask them to justify
    their existences.

I don't think it does anything.

If you live long enough and are sufficiently open the way you think can
    change.

What a little person you are.

This might be a reason to stand on the shoulders of giants. Do you know
    the source of that quotation?

    Have a nice day.

The same to you, your progenitrix and seven generations back; may you
always be satisfied with the surface and never terrified by the depths.

Consider changing the var to a readable format such as display i.e., PIC
9(6) etc for the purposes of testing and/or do a display (or print a
line showing the values having to move it to a display field if needed as some/many compilers do not convert for a display.

Please ignore the unhelpful posts here.

At the risk of adding another one, here are some observations:

    1. CA Realia COBOL may not be a good choice for modern program
development. I have not used it for over 25 years but it had problems
then and there is nothing to suggest it has improved.

Have you considered using GNU COBOL which is a very good product and
free...? (You can also get support for it freely and openly on the Web.)

Never mind, I am assuming you are not able to change the choice of
    Language, or COBOL.

(Having tried most versions of PC and Mainframe COBOL, I would recommend
either Micro Focus or Fujitsu for workstation use, with Fujitsu having a
slight edge if you need to use the MS Component Object Model (COM). GNU
COBOL would be a very good choice but it doesn't support OO COBOL or COM.)

    2. The documentation for your current Workbench is not freely available
on the Internet and that does not speak well of the product. If a
Company charge to have their documents available, it does not show an
open or encouraging disposition. People who buy the product will get the documents anyway and people who are looking to possibly buy the product
won't, if they are charged for information about it...

However, I did find some discussion here in CLC from a very long time
ago, which MIGHT give you some insights and certainly may tell you "who
    to call". Try this link:

    https://groups.google.com/g/comp.lang.cobol/c/QR3Ho2rl0Bs/m/Mlwqo1qAfEIJ

It would appear that there have been problems debugging source code used
with this compiler, ever since it was released.

    BOTTOM LINE:

    1. If You have any documentation, you should read it carefully. Follow
any examples and take it one step at a time. If you need clarification
of the English, (not your first language?) post here and I'll try to help.

    2. If you have no documentation and are doing paid work in CA Realia
COBOL, then talk to the vendor who sold you the compiler, or get the
client to do so. There is nothing wrong in asking for help; I've been a programmer for over 50 years and had help on many occasions. It hasn't
made me any less capable. Just make sure you have done everything you
can, so you do not waste people's time and do not expect people to do
your homework for you if it is a homework assignment.

    Good Luck!

    Pete.

It is a valid suggestion, Vince.

But is it likely that he hasn't?

Let me ask you one question:

Had you been an expert on CA Realia COBOL and had instantly known the
solution to his problem, would you have posted the same response?

I reckon (based on past experience here and in personal contact) that
you would have been happy to take a few minutes and help him.

    Think about it...

    Gilberto,

You do not know Doc Dwarf.

He is a kind, intelligent (and highly capable) man who has been a pillar
of support to this forum for decades.

Sadly, the decades of having people come here EXPECTING free help (and
in most cases never even saying "Thank you" when they get it...), and
the cheaters who think they can get their homework done for no effort on
their part, all tends to have a negative effect, and the resulting
    cynicism can sometimes be ascerbic.

Doc works in the real world at the cutting edge, and has to deal with
bad code produced by enthusiastic amateurs as well as professionals,
compounded by managers who use airline magazines as their source of understanding and actually despise people who really know what they're
talking about. In this environment, NOTHING is FREE. The Doc quite
rightly charges for his expertise and does not expect it to be given for nothing.

He can be forgiven for carrying some of his work ethic into a less
    appropriate place.

    Don't judge him.

    Don't judge the Doc.

Have you read the manual ?

    Vincent

It is a valid suggestion, Vince.

But is it likely that he hasn't?

Let me ask you one question:

Had you been an expert on CA Realia COBOL and had instantly known the solution to his problem, would you have posted the same response?

I would have given the answer but as I have not used it for over 30 years
at a guess (tried and dropped it as not fit for purpose - Any).

I reckon (based on past experience here and in personal contact) that
you would have been happy to take a few minutes and help him.

Yes I would have but hopefully as he has the compiler he also has the
    manuals.

    Think about it...

    No need :)

    Pete.

Do I need to setup any setting in the tool. Please help me if you have any inputs on this.

GNU
COBOL would be a very good choice but it doesn't support OO COBOL or COM.) >>
    2. The documentation for your current Workbench is not freely available
on the Internet and that does not speak well of the product. If a
Company charge to have their documents available, it does not show an
open or encouraging disposition. People who buy the product will get the
documents anyway and people who are looking to possibly buy the product
won't, if they are charged for information about it...

There is nothing wrong in asking for help; I've been a
programmer for over 50 years and had help on many occasions. It hasn't
made me any less capable. Just make sure you have done everything you
can, so you do not waste people's time and do not expect people to do
your homework for you if it is a homework assignment.

    Good Luck!

    Pete.

    Hi Pete,

    Congratulations!

    Perfect explanation with wise words.

You are a gentleman who seeks to help.

    Have a nice day.

    Thank you.

    Gilberto Junior

    Hi Gilberto,
Thank you for your kind words.

After being here for over 30 years now, I have had the sharper edges
rubbed off me and I see a bigger picture than I once did.

This forum was once a lively place with some very sharp minds debating
all kinds of stuff. The OT posts were at least as interesting as the
COBOL ones and friendships were formed between people who had never met
each other, but shared an interest in COBOL.

There were tantrums and sulks and there was laughter and good humor.

But people did get helped and most of us learned SOMETHING along the way.

Sadly, with the decline of COBOL, the traffic here also declined and it
is mainly the real old time COBOLlers that still visit regularly.

I come here because I value the forum as one of the last remaining
places on Earth where posts are not moderated and people can say what
they think. It is a tribute to the regulars that, even without
moderation, there is very little flaming or trolling and most posters
    behave like grown-ups.

When I look around a world in disarray with ever increasing encroachment
on Democracy and Free Speech, I see CLC as a little reminder of the time
when we didn't need a Nanny State to pass laws telling us what was "hate speech" and it was possible to defend the right of people to have and
express an opinion whether you agreed with it or not.

I'm fairly sure that I will fold before the forum does, but, if I'm
wrong and it goes, I will be glad to have been part of it.

    Pete.

Somebody stated they needed help, true. What they've asked for and what

Have you never been that person?

It has been a good, long while since I've been a person who asks for aid without offering some insight into the work I've done on my own.
