| Wow, 260 whole MEGA bytes, out of my monthly 10 GIGA byte tariff, that's
| 26 pence worth!
|
| For which they're backing up my app data and sending whatever push
| notifications, I have no complaints at that, and if I did I could, you
| know, turn of synchronization to the google account.
That's not the point. I don't use any Google
services. In fact, I generally put alomst all Google domains
in my HOSTS file. The data they're collecting was
specifically described as not related to Google services.
It's simply spying.
Do you really think Samsung has a right to track your
TV watching and GE has a right to track your grocery
purchases by sending screenshots of you frig? Does
Kohler have a right to track your toilet use just because
you bought their toilet? Where does it end? If you
hire a contractor to remodel your kitchen, does he
have a right to stop by freely or install cameras? Why?
Google has nothing to do with your phone account.
They only made the OS. They have no right tracking
people. Even the company providing phone service has
no business tracking your location or phone calls outside
of what they do to provide the service.
I only use a cellphone for occasional calls and typically
don't turn on the power for weeks at a time, but if I
were a typical user I'd be very frustrated that my only two
choices are Google and Apple -- two sleazy, spyware
companies that infest their phones, limit control, and
track usage. It amazes me that this kind of sleaze hasn't
been made illegal yet.
And now car companies are getting in on the action.
In MA the voters just overwhelmingly voted to force
automakers to design their data collection so that mechanics
and owners can access it via bluetooth. (Though now
the car companies are suing to stop the law.) But no
one raised the obvious question: Why fight over who owns
the data? They have no right collecting the data in the
first place! They only made the car!
So I'm glad for these lawsuits. The more the better.
I'd like to see it get to where criminal charges result
for spyware.
