Why, when I click on "reply" in order to read them, do some of them open
and then close again immediately (and then clicking again does nothing,
other than reverse the direction of the triangle)?

"If even one person" arguments allow the perfect to become the enemy of the good, and thus they tend to cause more harm than good.

I've never seen that - it will say "replies" if there is more
than one available, so if you're seeing "reply" (singular) there must
only be one. Perhaps it was just unfortunate timing, i.e. deleted
between the time you loaded the page and clicked?

    Tavis.

No, it happens often. Sometimes it says 2 and there's only 1 (say), and sometimes it says there is one but it disappears. Besides, if it was
just it disappearing, I don't think the little blue triangle would
continue to change direction when I click.
