• Gopherus v1.2

From Mateusz Viste@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jan 20 08:57:48 2020
Hello, yesterday Gopherus v1.2 got published.

Gopherus is a multiplatform, console-based gopher client (mainly
targeted to Linux and DOS, but should compile under BSD, Windows etc,
too, if one's motivated enough to try). Gopherus changelog follows.

    Gopherus v1.2 [19 Jan 2020]:
    - [new] bookmarks ("b" key),
    - [new] UTF-8 support,
    - [new] IPv6 support (except on the DOS target),
    - [new] full terminal width used now (no longer limited to 80 columns),
    - [new] all files from current folder can be downloaded by pressing
    F10,
    - [new] SDL versions have a resizeable (scalable) window,
    - [new] SDL versions react to keypad arrows as well as normal arrows,
    - [new] user may abort a connection during its 'connecting...' phase,
    - [new] home page shortcut key (F2),
    - [fix] fixed buffer overflow within menu lines parser,
    - [fix] SDL UI does not enforce software rendering any more,
    - [fix] improved pgup/pgdown keys logic in menus,
    - [fix] wordwrapped menu entries are displayed in parent's colors,
    - [fix] Windows sockets are properly closed (patch by Gisle Vanem),
    - [fix] function keys react properly when used with the CURSES
    interface,
    - [fix] telnet links are recognized now (but unsupported),
    - [mnt] Windows build no longer distributed (do it yourself),
    - [mnt] DOS 32-bit build no longer distributed (use the 16-bit
    version).

Nice client. I like how fine-toothed the color scheme is. Are there any
plans to add handler support, ie. defined apps for various file types?
Also it might be good to use something other than F1 for help conflicts
w/ many Linux/BSD desktop enviroments which usually have F1 pre-set for
    their own Help menu scheme.

Note that the scheme is totally configurable - details described in gopherus.txt. Myself, I am very fond of the "green on black" scheme -
brings back memories about better times, when men were men and computers
    were computers. :)

Yes, that's in the todo.txt. I'd like to have that, but can't say
when it will happen... Too many hobbies, not enough time.

Also it might be good to use something other than F1 for help

That's a problem I never had, my Linux distro does not seem to catch
F1 - but if that's a problem that does exist on some OSes, then it's
definitely worth looking into. I will probably add alternative key
bindings, so for example help would pop up when one presses either "F1"
or "h". That should not be complex to add, and it will solve also the
problem of users who do not have function keys at all on their
    keyboards.

    Actually it's a gnome-terminal issue -- F1 pops up the not-so-helpful
Gnome Terminal help docs if "shortcuts" are enabled. I finally figured
out how to re-assign/disable individual shortcuts so this is no longer
an issue. Was always accidentally hitting F1 as it's right next to ESC,
a frequent press for Vi users..

That girl1.txt was very unnecessary. Kinda ruined the whole video, which
was very good otherwise ... RFC1436 ain't about pr0n or whatnot http is

If you just cut that one out and repost the video, then it would be much
    better "promotional" video.

Hello Bud, thank you for your feedback. I must say I am genuinely
surprised that girl1's ASCII titties could bother anyone. I would never consider this "pr0n" material myself, but maybe it's because I'm some

Well. It's just Gopher is abnout content and not about tits and bling.
Like http protocol abusing whatnots we have nowadays. Mid 90's there was
still content first attitude in interwebs, but that is now changed as we
    all know.

And I must express my shame have been part of the madness is going on at
the moment. But that was 90's and it was custom to find ways to do stuff shoudn't be done on http.

Anyways I'm not seeing any value "marketing" Gopher with tits of anykind,
even with ASCII nudes. Just leave that for the already lost poor http.

The tits and bling were always available for those seeking it out,
only now so much of the web is traffic-driven in the name of profits
that sites feel the need to use them to attract people who were
    actually looking for other content.

That isn't all that effective with Gopher in the first place thanks
to text-only navigation with very limited formatting. We just end up
with girl1 text files burried down a few levels of directories and
easily avoided unless you happen to be looking over the shoulder of
someone who _is_ looking for that content.

As for including it in the video. Personally I don't seek out
pictures of naked ladies on the web, yet I'd already quite purposely
viewed girl1.txt there on Gopher. Each to their own. There's plenty
of content in phlogs, and even vintage files in the textfiles.com
mirrors, that will offend certain people - like on any public
    communications system.

I don't know how to determine what a majority of Gopher users would
be offended by - we're a pretty specific minority to begin with. So
I think a video like that showing an individual's idea of acceptable
content is as much as can be hoped for.

There is certainly a problem with the portrayal of women on the internet but I fail to get upset by a pair of oversized ASCII breasts over port 70. There was plenty of serious content presented in the video and I think it shows that gopher sites can be

Absolutely there has been as you said "for those seeking it out". This is
no news to anyone. But also like you stated that web is rendered into
something else but "The Information Highway" it was said to be back in the early days of public internets.

That isn't all that effective with Gopher in the first place thanks

Yes, nobody said anything like "this kind of things shouldn't be around"
or similar. I only pointed out that it's rathre corny and almost cringy to
put that in the video that is more or less "promotional or marketting"
video for the Gopher. Since 99% of Gopherscape is not tits. Nothing more nothing less, just a opinion how we should represent Gopher to the general public.

I don't know how to determine what a majority of Gopher users would

Yes. Like I said it before, only thing I'm critisising here is the representation of Gopher. Serious RFC stuff is very important thing in all stuff ... without them you wouldn't be writing your reply here.

Well. People who use Gopher are more or less communicating by other
means. But I have to agree with you on this one. It's good to see some
    action in the group!

I wonder who is the author of the Giant Girl ASCII art. Surely he would

ASCII art it self didn't tirgger any emotions. You including it in the
video was something that remotely triggered some emotions. Don't mix
    things up.

And back in the days nobody knew who made what. Except for very small
group of people very close to someone who did something. Was kinda beauty
    of it.

Anyway keep up going hard on Internet Gopher!

Ha, didn't know - I never was around BBSes. The Giant Girl is an ASCII
art picture I found on the internet somewhere in the '90 (and
religiously stored on a floppy for many years).

I'd rather not put tits of anykind in anyt kind of promotional video

Still, most ASCII art contains some signature (the most well known
being certainly 'jgs', as she was an amazingly prolific artist back
then). The Giant Girl doesn't have any obvious marker of that kind.

Anyway keep up going hard on Internet Gopher!

I wouldn't worry about it. Those early days certainly had their fill of
girlie stuff and ascii art portraying a nude woman is mild at best.

I do recall bbs days where certain boards specialized on nude images

No need I think - a web search based on the phrase you provided returns plenty of nice results. Thank you!

you're welcome! you might land on serious collections out there. if you haven't known/found it yet (which i doubt), search for Roy/SAC someday,
might be of some interests from an ascii fan like you.

This is wonderful thing that there is some info for almost lost history of the computing! Kudos!

yeah, Mateusz the Great ask for some refs for his `girl1.txt'? i provide. ascii nudes are serious business, friendo.

I also don't want to hurt anyones feelings ... but you guys are stuck in
the fucking stupid everything ruining PC culture that libratrds around the world have been vomiting all over past 5 years.

How this kind of madness even is possible for people who have apparently survived meow wars and all that Good Stuff(tm)?

indeed, we did; and as proud sons of Maleagant, we followed his dark lights:

we had withdrawn from the Great Information Highways, and dug our hole in
teh ancient protocol. there, without a drop of water, or a ray of sunshine,
we dried ourselves up, from head to toe, in small corpses under pile of
leaves. yes, in the wobbly glow of our phospor screens, we survived,
waiting for our moment, while the blessed by the Eternal September rejoiced
at our disappearance without suspecting our inevitable return.

and then, one day, the crow says that she heard in the distance someone who started crying again. so we opened an eye, we crawled, ate snow, licked
stale water... and our erstwhile ennemies shudder, because as they see us drinking, they understand that we are back.

    Fluffy little glitter mylittlepony!
