• Start problem with emacs 25.3.1

From Burkhard Schultheis@21:1/5 to All on Fri Dec 7 13:39:53 2018
I have a new SLES 15 machine, deployed from a template. Emacs was
installed (25.3.1). But the behavior at start is a little strange:

I call emacs /etc/fstab and I see the following: The window starts with
a usual size, then it shrinks and shows me 3 lines of the buffer *GNU
Emacs* only. If I display the buffer list, I see fstab on position 1.
    Then the behavior is normal.

When I detected this, I copied my old .emacs file from another machine,
    but nothing changed at startup.

The same emacs version on opensuse 15 does not have this problem.

What could it be? I use emacs about 20 years, but have never seen such a startup. Please help!

    Regards
    Burkhard

Just to be sure it's "naked" Emacs, check that you have no X resources
that apply (I've seen odd size effects from some of these and then run
emacs -Q /etc/fstab to confirm the behaviour. To check X resources, use
    xrdb -query -all.

TLDR: either (preferably) update to Emacs 26.1, or (possibly) rebuild 25.3.

PS gnu.emacs.help is a better resource for GNU Emacs questions.

That's the reason why. I opened a service request. I hope, they will
build a new version soon. We must use repository versions only. ;-)

    Thanks a lot!

Thanks, but there are absolutely no X resources on the machine. The
    other answer helped.

It's a little bit more complicated: It depends on the X server. With the
X server of the System (on the VMware system console) the error is
absent. But it is there whit the X server of Mobaxterm and with vcXsrv.

    Strange!

    F'up to gnu.emacs.help set!
