• OTN network

From Michelot@21:1/5 to All on Sat Nov 14 13:40:08 2015
    Bonsoir Huub,

It would seem that we have 2 OTN using.

    - Either it's a link between 2 equipments. For example, a link between 2 Ethernet BCB équipements inside a PBBN network. This link is similar to ETYn.

    - Either it's a complete network as can be VPLS, PBBN, PBB-TEN networks. In this case, the OTN network has its own peripheral and internal equipments.

Thanks very much for your advice.
    Best regards,
    Michelot

    I have to disagree.
But it is not your fault, there exists a lot of confusion
    regarding optical multiplexing.

    - Either it's a link between 2 equipments. For example, a link
between 2 Ethernet BCB équipements inside a PBBN network. This link
    is similar to ETYn.

This would be pure optical multiplexing, better known as WDM
(wavelength division multiplex) where more than one optical
signal is transmitted on the same fiber.
There exist now CWDM (up to 8 optical signals) and DWDM (up to
    80 optical signals)

    - Either it's a complete network as can be VPLS, PBBN, PBB-TEN
networks. In this case, the OTN network has its own peripheral and
    internal equipments.

This is the "real" OTN. OTN has electical and optical multiplexing.
the optical multiplex looks like WDM but has an extra feature:
it supports OAM similar to the OAM of SDH and the OAM of Carrier
    Class Ethernet G.8013/Y.1731 and MPLS-TP G.8113.1/G.8113.2

I like to refer to WDM as technology of the previous century
and OTN as technology of this century.

Unfortunately there are several vendors/opreators who use the
term WDM but actually mean OTN...

    Best regards, Huub.

    Bonjour Huub,

Many thanks for the clear reply.

    I have to distinguish:

    (1) OTN, composed of an electrical multiplexing domain (with associated OAM functions) and an optical multiplexing domain (with another associated OAM functions).

    (2) WDM, even if it can be similar to the OTN optical multiplexing domain, with the reduced fuctionality (without OSC).

I like to refer to WDM as technology of the previous century
and OTN as technology of this century.

I don't know why... but I like what you like.

    Best regards,
    Michelot
