If I need to get a new modem,
"new" - good luck with that. I haven't seen new modems in a
store in maybe 3 years. "new" may need to be "new to me",
meaning something used off e-bay or similar,
I'm inclinded to get an internal card.
Haven't seen one of those advertised in 5+ years
Any clues as to specs? How to get?
v.92 is the telecom spec ("56k") and if internal, most likely
a PCI connector (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_PCI
to see what the connector looks like). As for manufacturer and
model numbers... USR-5610 rings a bell, but try searching for
"Rob Clark Winmodems are not Modems" - a web-page from about
10-15 years ago, and the "Modem-HOWTO" from the Linux
Documentation project. Problem with PCI modems is that many
were "WinModem" (USR trade name) also known as "software" modems
I rather doubt that drivers are available for anything but win9x,
w2k and maybe xp. Win7 and later MAY not have drivers because
"nobody uses modems any more" ;-) ("MAY" because I don't use
windoze - but that's another story.)
Honestly, you're likely to have better luck with a USB. like
the USR-5637.
