I remember working on that code back in the dark ages, probably pre-2000,
when Walter (??) was in charge of the cdi/email stuff

re: RAID6 - I was in the unfortunate position of having an old RAID6 setup recently, a disk had gone bad. Total rebuild

    James:

Sorry James. I have just been too busy to go read through the forums. The current interface is klunky, as you know, so it takes too long to follow threads to see if there's something I can add to a discussion, so I do it only infrequently. I also relied on the email gateway, so I have taken
charge of the work to get new forum software going. Now on to your
    question:

Run, run as fast as you can! RAID60 is the absolutely STUPIDEST
    contraption
    ever imagined. Think about it:

Let's take a bunch of RAID6 arrays that are only marginally better than
RAID5 in one of the several ways that RAID5 is at risk and is even slower
to write to. Next how about lets stripe that bunch of RAID6 arrays
    together
with not additional redundancy so that if we do lose two drives in one of
the RAID6s or the data becomes corrupted by creeping disk damage we will
have three or four times as much data at risk!

RAID10 all the way! The additional cost is relatively small and your data will be 95% safer, recovery will take 80% less time if you do lose a
    single
drive. Performance during recovery will be 80% faster and your data during recovery at least 80% safer.

BTW, feel free to send me questions directly. I will let you know if you cross a line. B^)

I’ve definitely been missing the forums. I had posted something using

Since email hasn’t been working, there is definitely a lot less
    activity on
    the forums.

My posting on October 4 was:

I am working with my network team to replace some 5+ year old hardware
    for
my Informix/Webserver environment. We are running IDS 12.10 on SLES 11
    in a
virtual (VMWare) environment. Our dbspace is approximately 250GB and
accessed pretty heavily from a cluster of load balanced Apache servers.
    I
    know that RAID5 isn't recommended (
    https://www.askdbmgt.com/why-raid5-should-be-avoided-at-all-costs.html),
but my networking team and hardware vendor (Tegile) is recommending
    RAID60.
I am hesitant to use any RAID level that utilizes parity, but this is
    way
beyond my area of expertise, and I'm curious to hear recommendations
    from
    the community.
