Sorry for the delayed reply. I sent along "NULOAD.SDA" because you mentioned archiving files. The NULOAD header can be useful when putting together SDA's. One of the features of that header is that, while a file is being loaded, RAM is selected at $D000 to $DFFF. So the ending address of the file may be at $FFFF. Unless a file is specifically written for loading with that header, that feature is of little use. But it can let you put larger files into SDA format.

Ordinarily, for a C-64 SDA, the ARCed file must have a maximum size of 188 disk blocks (if any of the component files have been crunched). If a one-block title file and a seven-block SDA header are added, you have a 196-block file. The NULOAD header won't help in that case, because the ending address of the file in computer memory is around $CB00. But if the ARCed file has NOT been crunched, it's a different story. Crunching may be excluded when ARCing a file by using the "z" switch:

arc/cz file file1 file2 file3

But if the file is already ARCed, it's possible that crunching was not used.
If the original file(s) were GIF's or demos, for example, they were probably stored (no compression). The stowage method can be determined without extraction by using the "l" command:

arc/l file

If no files in the archive were crunched, the ending address in computer memory is $F9FF (63999) maximum. But with ordinary loading, that number becomes $CFFF (53207). But now the four-block SDA header (which won't uncrunch files) may be used. Along with a one-block title file, the maximum size of the ARCed file before SDAing is 196 blocks. But with the NULOAD header, since the $F999 limit can be used, that number becomes 238 blocks.

About SPYNE. In the Commodore Applications forum on CompuServe where I work, I upload C-64 demos that I receive from Elwix/Style. We have a policy that the user must not require any dearchiving programs other than ARC230. So when Elwix sends me megademos and other large files (which are usually in Lynx format), there is a problem. That is why I wrote SPYNE. There is no compression, but demos wouldn't compress anyway. There is a large overhead (the header is fifteen blocks plus one block for each eight embedded files), but with very large files, that isn't too objectionable.

Gary Farmaner is the contract holder for the CompuServe forum; he gets a small percentage of the revenue generated by that forum.
