• Senior Research Scientist in Machine Learning and Natural Language Proc

From Niemann UKP Lab@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jul 23 07:15:38 2021
The Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing (UKP) Lab at the Department of Computer Science, Technische Universität (TU) Darmstadt, Germany has an opening for a

    Senior Research Scientist
(PostDoc-level; for an initial term of two to three years)

We are looking to strengthen the lab’s profile in scalable Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) with applications to Question Answering and related textual inference tasks. The role involves leading a newly established research
team with several PhD students within a recently funded DFG project SQUIARE on reusable NLP and QA infrastructure. We work with text and increasingly with multimodal content. Based on prior successful research products of the UKP Lab such as S-BERT [1]
or AdapterHub [2], we aim to release a novel NLP framework for the research community. The successful candidate is welcome to develop a research agenda in explainable NLP and QA, efficient and green NLP, and the NLP evaluation.

We are looking for outstanding candidates with a strong profile and PhD in Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing or Text Mining. Prior experience with relevant areas of NLP and Question Answering as well as strong engineering and leadership
skills are a plus. We highly appreciate demonstrable engagement in open-source projects, communication skills in English and the ability to effectively cooperate with scientists of various interdisciplinary backgrounds.

The research group [3] comprises over thirty team members working on cutting-edge NLP and Machine Learning. Their novel applications extend to mining scientific literature and social media, applied cybersecurity, or AI for the Social Good in general. UKP
Lab provides a highly agile, diverse and supportive research environment with a wide cooperation network of both leading academic and industrial partners. The Department of Computer Science of the TU Darmstadt is regularly ranked among the top ones in
Germany. Its unique profile related to AI (cf. https://hessian.ai) and information processing (cf. https://www.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/aiphes) emphasizes NLP, ML and their great potential for the industry and society at large.

UKP Lab is committed to cutting-edge research, publishing in top-tier venues, cooperative work style and close interaction of all team members. The selected candidates enjoy diverse opportunities for professional growth, leading both to successful
faculty careers and exciting industrial research jobs. Darmstadt is very close to the Frankfurt airport and provides an excellent living environment for incoming staff members. There is an ELLIS unit in Darmstadt, and Iryna Gurevych is co-director of the
    ELLIS NLP program [4].

The position assumes that you can move to Darmstadt or a nearby German location. It is currently not possible to provide remote employment opportunities that would allow you to work from another country.

To apply, please provide a detailed CV, a motivation letter and an outline of previous work and research experience along with the names of up to three referees (if available). Applications from female candidates are particularly encouraged. All other
things being equal, candidates with disabilities will be given preference. Please submit your application via the following form by August 31st, 2021: https://careers.ukp.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/ukprecruitment. Applications arriving after the deadline
will still be considered if the position is not yet filled.
