Alexei Navalny, the Kremlin's Most Ardent Critic, Dies in Prison
Thomas Grove and Matthew Luxmoore
Feb. 16, 2024
Russia's Alexei Navalny, a fierce anticorruption campaigner who galvanized
the country's political opposition, died in prison, bringing to an end a
life dedicated to fighting Russia's slow descent into authoritarianism
under Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The cause of his death was still being established, said prison
authorities. He collapsed after a walk at his prison colony on Friday
after which, they said, he lost consciousness and couldn't be revived.
Navalny, who was 47 and had been in jail since 2021, was serving three
prison sentences amounting to more than 30 years in a penal colony. He was detained after returning from Germany, where he was recovering from what
German doctors said was poisoning with Soviet-era nerve agent, Novichok. Navalny blamed his poisoning on the Kremlin, which denied involvement in
any attempt to harm him.
