I love how predictable you are.

Thank you. It IS one of my strongest traits, unlike yours, where you're all over the map.

Why Being Predictable Is Actually A Great Thing According To Science

We always like to think that we are complex and have unique tastes and behaviors. Not only is that not the case, but predictability is also a great aid to success.

(sure has a successful affect on your scatterbrain)

I am probably more predictable than you think, and that's okay... I am not alone. We all have a tendency to think of ourselves as more complex, unique, and unpredictable than we actually are.

However, our childhood personality predicts pretty much every significant real- life outcome during adulthood, including happiness, relationship satisfaction, career success, and maladaptive behaviors. For example, gambling problems at the age of 30 can be predicted by poor childhood behaviors such as lack of self-control at the age of three. This doesn't mean that our fate is fully determined at childhood, but rather, that we tend to behave in pretty consistent ways from an early age.

These behaviors are the essence of who you are, how you differ from others, and what makes you you. No need to be ashamed of it. And yet most people seem to dislike the notion that they are predictable. It's yet another way we see how little self-knowledge people tend to have.

For example, when you ask people about their personality, they will typically say that it really depends on the context or situation. "Sometimes I'm quite introverted, but other times I'm a real extrovert." However, when others think about them, they have no difficulties determining if they are introverted or extroverted. Most people will also tend to exaggerate how diverse and unpredictable are their tastes in music, food, and friends. We see ourselves as unpredictable free spirits equally capable of doing one thing or the exact opposite in any given situation, but that delusional fantasy is not shared by others.

It is also inconsistent with the facts: There is a repetitive pattern to our everyday behaviors. The main reason for this is that a sense of uniqueness tends to inflate our egos. It makes us feel creative, original, and interesting, and in our consumer society this signals higher status and sophistication.

Scientific research has also linked the need for uniqueness to narcissistic tendencies and alarmingly shows that the tendency to see ourselves as unique and special has been rising significantly during the last few decades, particularly among U.S. college students.

So yes, we are all unique, just like everybody else. Perhaps it is time to actually embrace predictability? In fact, psychological studies indicate that there are several disadvantages to being (and seeing yourself as) unpredictable.

First, people who think of themselves as more predictable and less complex tend to enjoy positive life events more.

Second, though a lot of organizations pretend to celebrate disruptors, creatives, and unpredictable personalities, the reality is that you are much more likely to get rewarded at work if you behave in more consistent and predictable manners. For instance, most people prefer to work for a boss who is predictable and consistent, to the point of being boring.

The reason is rather obvious: People want to avoid stress and anxiety in their everyday life, and few things are more stressful than an unpredictable boss. Bosses also prefer employees who deliver according to expectations, which involves operating within a well-defined model of talent or potential, with predefined behaviors.

Third, there are innumerable benefits to understanding your default patterns of behaviors and typical dispositions. The only way you can successfully plan ahead in any area of life is to have an idea of what you are likely to prefer, think, feel, or do in the future. If people learned to predict their own behavior better, no matter how good, bad, rational, or irrational such behaviors are, more poor decisions could be avoided.

The more unpredictable you think you are, the less effective you will be at influencing other people. The naïve belief that you can control your reputation as you please and create whatever persona you like in order to make an impression on others, accounts for many disappointments in life, such as not getting a job interview or promotion, failing to impress an audience during a presentation, or not getting any likes on your social media posts.

Contrary to what you may think, others are generally better at predicting your own behavior than you are yourself. Numerous scientific studies have found that our colleagues are better able than we are to predict our job performance and career success. This also means that you can predict how well your work colleagues will do on their jobs better than they can.

There's a simple reason for this too. When we think of ourselves, we pay too much attention to our thoughts and feelings and too little to our actual behavior. Of course, what we think and feel is important, but since most of our thoughts and feelings remain internal and invisible to others, a much better approach for understanding ourselves from the perspective of others is to focus instead on what we do and how those behaviors may be interpreted or perceived by others. In that sense, self-awareness is really about other-awareness: awareness of what other people think of you.

    Atlanta

What started as a peaceful protest at Centennial Olympic Park Friday afternoon turned into hours of unrest. Protesters set fires, looted stores and broke windows. They even climbed the sign outside the headquarters of media company CNN and spray painted messages on it. The building is also home to a police precinct. Also damaged was the College Football Hall of Fame.

    Bakersfield

Ten people were arrested and a memorial to a fallen police officer was vandalized during a protest that drew 200-300 people, according to KGET.com, an NBC affiliate. Most of the arrests were for resisting and obstruction but, KGET reported that one person was charged with attempted murder for driving through the crowd and hitting a 15-year-old girl.

    Boston

Hundreds gathered in the city's South End for a relatively tame demonstration asking for justice for Floyd. An undisclosed number of people were arrested after clashing with police.

    Chicago

Protesters marching through downtown Chicago left behind broken windows and toppled garbage cans and flower pots early Saturday. There were an unknown number of arrests but no serious injuries, according to the Chicago Tribune.

    Columbus

Key streets in Ohio's capital were blocked for hours as about 400 protesters gathered into a stand-off with police, according to The Columbus Dispatch. Demonstrators hurled water bottles, flares and smoke bombs at officers. Police fired back with pepper spray. The demonstrators broke windows and set fire to a ticket office at the Columbus Association for Performing Arts.

    Dallas/Fort Worth

A peaceful protest that started at the Dallas Police Department turned violent as demonstrators set fires and looted stores in downtown Dallas. Police used tear gas to disperse the group, who then walked to a nearby major freeway and blocked traffic, according to FOX 4 News. About 200 people also chanted and marched in Fort Worth in peaceful protest.

    Des Moines

"Violent melee" spread through the city Friday night, according to the Des Moines Register, as protesters threw bricks and rocks at police cars. Businesses in at least one section of the city boarded up their windows in advance of the planned demonstration. Windows in the federal courthouse, a hotel, and a tire service business were broken. Police reportedly fired chemical irritants to disperse the crowd. Protest organizers said their planned one-hour assembly was peaceful and that they encouraged people to go home after. Another group incited the violence that happened hours later, they said.

    Denver

Protesters set fire to trash cans and dumpsters, smashed windows at the Colorado Judicial Center and other buildings and threw water bottles and other items at police. Officers responded by firing tear gas and pepper bullets into the crowd.

Dozens of people were arrested when a demonstration of about 1,500 turned violent Friday at about 5:45 p.m. Protesters circled police vehicles holding their middle fingers up, police in riot gear later moved in creating a face off with rocks and bottles being thrown and police charging the crowd, according to MLive. A 19-year-old man was also killed when shots were fired by someone from a passing car.

    District of Columbia

Protesters gathered outside the gates of the White House. Some said that President Donald Trump's Tweet calling Minneapolis demonstrators "thugs," added to their anger, NBC Washington reported. The White House was placed on lockdown for about an hour. Five people were arrested.

Five police officers were injured and more than 400 people were arrested during violent protests downtown. Property and vehicles were vandalized and six people were charged for looting, according to ABC 7.

    Louisville

Demonstrators protested both Floyd's death and the death of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old who was killed by Louisville Police in March during a raid on her home. As hundreds gathered, multiple fires were set. Officers fired tear gas and rubber bullets, one of which was launched at a CNN affiliate reporter who was live on the air Friday night, according to NBC News. Metro Police have since apologized.

    Memphis

Protestors marched in peaceful demonstration to the National Civil Rights Museum, the former site of the Lorraine Motel, where Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed. They chanted as they walked before kneeling in a moment of silence at the museum, according to U.S. News.
