It is planned to release an Ubuntu Unity 22.10 edition that come with
    the Unity desktop by default.
Unity is a development by Canonical and has been the default desktop environment until 17.10. A group of people continued the development.
Unity is very controversial, some people like it, other hate it.

    Thanks for the news.

I installed Unity on Ubuntu 20.04 LIVE.

    It's just another Desktop preference.

Completely true, but now there is an ISO that provides that installed
by default, like Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu do.

Giving the user the option to choose at install time would be nice.

Or, install both and give user option to choose at login. :-)

This is possible, just install the other desktop and configure the
display manager to start the specific desktop after the login.

Unsure if my KABOOM this morning is related ...

I have my install of jammy configured exactly that way.

Booted 22.04.1 LTS into openbox and did routine system update:

    apt update;apt full-upgrade

Lotta gnome-related stuff (etc) got updated, then it suggested:

    apt autoremove

to get rid of (now redundant) sddm (KABOOM!).

GUI session I was on (openbox) went POOF. Dropped into CLI.

    No GUI, except either via:

    startx openbox

    or:

    xinit openbox

    from CLI session.

Bonus Points: customizations in .config/openbox ignored.

    Never a dull moment ...

Apologies for followup of my own post ...

Fixed this (to my satisfaction) by reinstalling sddm:

    apt install sddm

That brings up the funky sddm X-login automagically but at least
I don't hafta manually start openbox from CLI (startx openbox).
