From John Corbett@21:1/5 to All on Tue Oct 31 10:31:14 2023
Not surprisingly, as the 60th anniversary of the JFK assassination approaches, a handful of new documentaries have been produced and I'm sure some of
the cable channels will replay some of the old ones. This is hardly an indication of a renewed interest in the subject. What we are going to see is
a fraction of what was produced for the 50th anniversary which in turn was
less than the 40th anniversary produced. The 40th anniversary was probably
the peak because by then there were far more niche cable channels around
that there were for previous anniversaries. I think it was The History Channel which ran NBC's entire coverage of that weekend from their earliest bulletins to the burial service at Arlington National Cemetary. I think they even played it beginning at the exact time on Friday afternoon that the news broke. I always regretted not recording it although logistically it would have been
very difficult as I would have to replace the VHS tapes every 6 hours even recording at the lowest resolution. Maybe it's out on YouTube still or maybe DVP has it in his vast archives.

The one that has me interested is a 3 part documentary that will play on NatGeo beginning on November 5. One of the people interviewed was Clint Hill.
No telling how good or bad it will be until I see it.

Benny can't come to grips with the fact the JFK assassination is of interest to a niche special
interest group. Whereas in the days when broadcast TV ruled the world, a program had to
draw many millions of viewers, now with cable, streaming, podcast, and social media options,
programs are being produced that are directed at a few thousand subscribers. Any schmuck
with a webcam can create content. Even someone like Gil.

The NatGeo documentary will likely draw a decent sized audience. It's been advertised for
months, so an audience of tens of thousands is likely. Perhaps even six figures. In a country of
330 million people, about 10 million more if you count illegal immigrants, that's not much of an
audience. The opening episode will be up against Sunday night football game which will draw
hundreds of times more viewers. Of course, nothing draws well when it is up against the NFL.

For the millennials and Gen-Z, the JFK assassination is as relevant as the McKinley assassination
was to our generation. It happened a long time ago and means nothing to current affairs.

Our presence here indicates we are part of that very small interest group that still gives a shit
about JFK's assassination. I find it an interesting subject with all the various subplots, but as
murder mystery, it's pretty lame. The perpetrator was revealed on page one.
