• NAVIGATION BETWEEN FOLDERS

From knuttle@21:1/5 to All on Fri Aug 9 22:12:53 2024
I have many years worth of picture on my computer. Using an image
processor I can move between the pictures quite easily.

Is there a way to move between folders?

Is there a keyboard short cut that would cause File explorer to Skip to
the next folder when you finish looking at the picture in one folder?
Like skipping to the next picture in a folder.

    knuttle,

Using an image processor I can move between the pictures quite easily.

Is there a way to move between folders?

That is fully upto that "image processor" program of yours.

But as folders *are ment to* keep their contents seperated from other
folders there is only a /very slight/ (nearing zero) chance that /any/
program, image processor or otherwise, will do what you want.

Is there a keyboard short cut that would cause File explorer to Skip to
    the next folder

(I noticed that you switched from "image processor" to "file browser")

No. If only because, when you have multiple sub-folders, their parent has absolutily no idea what the previous sub-folder you where in was - and this
not what the next one would be.

Having said that, if you are in /the file explorers/ folder tree, you can
use the cursor-keys to move to the next folder - and show/hide its children
by pressing the arrow-right/left key. You can also move from the
folder-tree pane to the file-list pane using CTRL-TAB, and back with SHIFT-CTRL-TAB

And there is perhaps a "trick" (of sorts) : When I search a folder for a certain file-type (*.jpg in your case?) I get all the matching files in that folder *and its subfolders* in a single, long list. Switch the "view" of
that (psudo) folder to "thumbnails" and you should be able to see all
images, and view any of them in their big(ger) size by pressing "enter" (opening the default viewer for that image type).

    Regards,
    Rudy Wieser

If the number of sub folders was low, you could pin them in the quick access list in the left pane
in Explorer, and then when done with folder A, just click on folder B in quick access, then C...etc

Workable for a few folders, and few fixed folders but not flexible.

To put all the images in a tree, into one list,
in File Explorer on a modern Windows, enter this
in the Search box in the upper right.

    width: >0

This will cause every GIF, BMP, PNG, JPG to appear in the list.

On my S: drive, the item count in the lower left of the
File Explorer (search result) shows "2,894 items".

Irfanview seems to like to change images, when you use the
mouse wheel carelessly, so perhaps it has a folder walk strategy.

        Paul
That is a neat trick but it still honors the folder limitation
However that would be great when you are looking for one picture and
don't remember exactly when it was taken.  (I have all my pictures in
folder name for the month they were taken)

Using IrfanView, if you scroll through the photos in a folder (using the toolbar arrows or, as Paul mentions, the mouse) you will eventually hit
a dialog giving you the option to continue in the same folder or choose another. If you select the blank option under 'Current folder' and hit
the Space bar you'll get a list of all sub-folders in the current folder
(e.g. months in that year or whatever) and can then select where you
want to go. Doing it is quicker than explaining it :)
