• SurfacePro4 Battery test?

From Peter Jason@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jul 13 09:44:32 2024
I have a SurfacePro4 computer which now operates only when plugged
into external power. And not otherwise.

How can I test if it is a failed battery or something else?

False alarm, an upgrade fixed it.

Fyi...If you want some additional information on the Surface battery >status..consider NirSoft's BatteryInfoView. Does not require
    installation of additional dll files.

Runs fine on my Surface and Laptops in Win10 and Win11.

Thanks, I downloaded it. The battery is 7 years old.

    You're welcome.

From a historical perspective across a variety of Surface models dating
    back quite a few years.
    - There have been a sprinkling of reports and not unique to a given
    Surface on battery life/premature decay.

Like your 7yr Surface, one of ours(mine) is a Surface 3, now ~9 yrs old.
    - BatteryInfoView indicates current capacity at 76%. Now, at full
    charge with typical use(primarily Internet - Edge/Chrome, Office 2019
H/B - mostly Outlook for email, iTunes and periodic updating) the
battery still provides about 3.0-3.5 hours of use before it reaches the
    low level charge setting.

My battery reads 81%, but I use the unit mainly for reading pdfs, and
    rarely for videos & pics.
I upgrade it over WiFi since I use it at home (no Internet) and all
    else at work.
I discovered it was possible to upgrade the unit itself and now the
speed has improved. It will not accept Windows11 though.

I take it into work occasionally for upgrades etc. There I have all
the NBN Internet facilities. For home the mobile phone suffices, and
I could use the "hotspot" thing if I want to.
    PS I live alone.

FWIW My Surface Pro 4 exhibited a swollen battery - screen was bulging,
just before it went out of warranty. MS replaced with a virtually
identical Surface Pro 5. As I recall, battery life was OK for a several
year old computer but the the swollen battery spoke a lot louder than a capacity gauge.
