• Is thunderbird capable of searching more than one local folder?

Long ago I saved all my Google mail to local folders in thunderbird
with one folder per year for about 15 years so about 15 folders.

If you ask why, that was the easiest way to organize the messages
given there were about 1GB of messages per local folder already.

Almost every day, I often want to search that mail for something,
which is why I saved it all in the first place.

Is thunderbird incapable of searching multiple folders?
If so, how do I tell thunderbird to search more than one folder?

Here's what I do that fails.
I select all fifteen local folders.
I right click on those selected fifteen folders.
There is no option for search. :(

The workaround is to select one local folder.
I right click on that one selected local folder.
Now I get the option of "Search Messages".

I run this same search fifteen times, once for each local folder.
But why can't I search more than one local folder at a time?
    What am I doing wrong?

Is thunderbird capable of searching more than one local folder?

If the folders are part of a hierarchy, you can can right-click a parent/grandparent/etc folder and search... downwards from there.

Provided the following 2019 article is still accurate:

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1271996

Yep, you need a parent folder to start a search on its subfolders.
However, searching is restricted to a per-account boundary. If all the
OP's 15 archive folders are subfolders under Local Folders, he can
select Local Folders and hit Ctrl+Shift+F, or right-click on Local
Folders, to search on all its subfolders. The poster in the forum
mentions to leave "search sub folders" option selected.

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/global-search

That says a global search is doable. The search will work across
accounts provided the indexing feature in Tbird is enabled. What the OP
did before seems more like he was filtering to find matching messages
    rather than searching.

I found a guide on search in Tbird at:

You should try posting your question to the

The thread was on that group from the start, it's unclear why win10 was included at all.

You could use Copernic Desktop Search.

I remember using that way over a decade ago. Stopped using it when it
stopped being free. Pricing is noted at:

    https://copernic.com/en/desktop/pricing/

Don't see Thunderbird's message store files listed under Basic
    ($1.83/month) at:

    https://copernic.com/en/desktop/search-over-170-files/

Thunderbird (only e-mails and contacts) is listed under Advanced.
That'll cost more ($2.92/month). You can buy ($30) their Thunderbird extension. Other than a 30-day free trial, I saw no freeware version.

The trial is free (https://copernic.com/en/free-trial/). The download
of the trial is free. The product is NOT free. Not many freeware users
want to throw payware at a solution.

    https://copernic-desktop-search-home.software.informer.com/3.7/
(Personally I don't trust downloads from there.)

That says an ancient Home version 3.7 was free. Not much info on the
old version, like it will search *inside* Tbird's mbox database files.

Does Copernic itself provide a freeware version of their Desktop Search,
or are you suggesting to find somewhere an ancient version?

    Dunno.
Several sites say it's freeware, others not & others free download tempter :

    Download Crew
    - https://www.downloadcrew.com/article/4100/copernic_desktop_search_free

    Techspot
    - https://www.techspot.com/downloads/37-copernic-desktop-search.html

Neither of the above are on my go to list of freeware providers but I
would use them if I couldn't find what I want elsewhere.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^

You probably meant to say Copernic.

From the other replies, looks like Thunderbird's search will do what the
OP wants: search recursively down from a parent folder. The OP has not returned to this thread in over 2 weeks to note if the in-program
Thunderbird suggestions address his concern, or not.

As for searching outside of Thunderbird, I would suggest voidtools'
[Search] Everything. It's free. Only for business use where support
from the vendor is important would I suggest paying for a similar
product. For searching inside, the OP should first see if Thunderbird
also provides what the OP wants.
