• Chicken-shit stunts being pulled by Microsoft in Windows 11

From John C.@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jun 26 07:14:29 2024
If you're thinking about updating to Windows 11, you might want to
reconsider that choice. Microsoft (under the stewardship of Satya
Nadella as CEO) is currently doing two things in Windows 11 that have
    caught my attention:

    1. Windows 11 starts forcing OneDrive backups without asking permission

    https://www.pcworld.com/article/2376883/attention-microsoft-activates-this-feature-in-windows-11-without-asking-you.html

    https://www.ghacks.net/2024/06/25/windows-11-set-up-is-automatically-enabling-onedrive-folder-back-up-for-users/

    and:

    2. Microsoft erases guide for switching to local Windows accounts

    https://www.pcworld.com/article/2375396/microsoft-erases-guide-for-switching-to-local-windows-account.html

The second is still easily gotten around by searching the internet for instructions before doing the install of or update to Windows 11. For
    now at least.

The first one isn't gotten around AFAIK at this point. If you already
have some files backed up on OneDrve, then this won't bother you.
However, if you're like me and have actually UNINSTALLED OneDrive, I
believe it will be reinstalled with the update to or fresh install of
    Windows 11.

I've said for a long time that M$ has a goal of forcing everybody into
using dumb terminals and paying rental fees for the use of their OS.
They also want to eventually force you to pay fees in order to access
your own data. These two stunts mentioned above are a clear step in
    those directions.

Change to Linux. I have no such issues. No MS account, no One Drive, no update reboots, I can tell
what is being installed down to the actual package and hold that update forever if I want.
Such a simple system. With limited needs, it's a great system.

Yes, but I'm afraid anyone who cares already knows. I find
it striking how passive people are about devices. People let their
computers and cellphones spy on them and foist crapware on
them, as though they didn't actually own the devices. Maybe
it's partly because Microsoft have taken the boiling frog
approach. Each step is "not that bad". They've turned Windows
into spyware that installs things without asking, and what's the
response? One person thinks it's a joke. Another suggests Linux.
A third is insulted that you'd even dare to expect an honest
    product.

People on Reddit routinely express passivity. For instance, they
might complain about an aspect of copilot, but it never occurs to
them to question what right Microsoft have to intrude on the
computer they own to install copilot in the first place.

I remember in '99 one time Microsoft was caught using an ActiveX
control in IE to record registration info from the Registries of people visiting Windows Update. It was a scandal. How dare they?! Microsoft
promised to stop. Now they spy, install changes willy nilly, and virtually claim ownership of your computer. And people think that's normal.

You own the hardware but Microsoft owns the operating system. If you
don't agree with the licensing terms then why did you install
Microsoft's Operating system? You should really be using something else.
There are 1000s of Linux distros so go and use one from the selection
available to you. Don't tell us Microsoft runs a monopoly because they
don't. The law makers would come after them if they did anything
illegal. If anything, it is you who is doing things that are construed
as illegal. For example, to download Windows 11, you have to spoof your identity. Why do you do that?

You seem to have lots of problems with Windows and Apps running on them.
Why are you so stupid not able to learn how to use a computer?

One reason M$ spies so much is that India has taken it over IMO.

And I totally agree. I have to use a cell phone, so I'm using a very
basic flip phone that runs KaiOS. KaiOS still spies on people though.
Only way to prevent it from doing it is to turn off the phone, then
crack it open and remove the battery.

See my reply to Big Al about a possible functional alternative to W10
    and 11.

Perhaps you're right, Big Al. It just occurred to me that maybe the best
way to go is to have two computers:
    1. an air-gapped (non-networked and offline) computer running W7 or even XP
    2. a Linux-running computer for being online.

This would take care of Microsoft's bullshit. That is, as long as the
    legacy computer lasted.

Just slip the phone inside whenever you think it is spying on you.

I stayed with Windows 7. I don't have any of that destructive update
crap. I use a simple program that keeps me in a virtual restore mode.
Any crap happens, I reboot and am back without any problem.

In previous articles, we’ve often dedicated time to extolling the
virtues of Linux. However, as with Windows and Mac OS X, there are
plenty of reasons why the OS with the penguin mascot might not be the
    best choice for your PC.

Here are our top 10 reasons why you should leave Linux to the geeks and
stay loyal to your current OS.

    1. Because you’re happy with your current OS

Open source software is all well and good, but when you think of what
we actually do with our PCs (reading email, browsing the web, listening
to music), there are equally good solutions available for Linux,
Windows and Mac. So, why change?

    2. You don’t need to know how to build a car if all you want to do is
    drive

If you can build, program and understand source code then you’re highly- skilled and well done to you. But not everyone wants to do that, nor
does everyone have the time to learn. If you can turn on your PC, click
a couple of icons and access your favourite programs with no fuss,
    that’s enough.

You said it. If you don't like your current OS...then move.
If you like Windows then shut up and keep using it.

There are several Linux systems the out of the box, just like Windows, work!! You do a few things
to make them just a bit better and leave it alone.

It's simple. Besides, I was responding to John C. the OP.

In previous articles, we_ve often dedicated time to extolling the virtues of Linux. However, as with Windows and Mac OS X, there are plenty of reasons why the OS with the penguin mascot might not be
the best choice for your PC.

Here are our top 10 reasons why you should leave Linux to the
geeks and stay loyal to your current OS.

    1. Because you_re happy with your current OS

Open source software is all well and good, but when you think of
what we actually do with our PCs (reading email, browsing the web, listening to music), there are equally good solutions available
for Linux, Windows and Mac. So, why change?

    2. You don_t need to know how to build a car if all you want to
    do is drive

MX Linux is a version of Linux you just install and use.

All you have to do is move the panel from the left side to the
bottom. Remove items you don't want in the panel and add items you
    do want.

I never have to open a terminal and use the command line.

    https://mxlinux.org/

If you want to try it get XFCE.

You people just don't get it. WHY should I move to a new OS and have
    to learn all over again?

    WHY?

Are you so damn insecure that unless the entire world agrees with you
on an OS you're life is worthless. WHY can't you simply get the
message? WE DON'T GIVE A DAM ABOUT LINUX!

I tried to help, so fuck you.

You are a typical tech type who simply cannot handle the real world
unless you bury yourself in hardware and software. The average Usenet
user doesn't give a damn how THINGS work. The simpler the better.
That's why automatic transmissions in automobiles replaced manual gear shifting.

It's a standard reply to folks that whine about windows. Just get linux. You'll be saved.

First of all, the average user uses Windows because that and the Mac OS
are what is availble on new computers. No average buyer knows that
Linux or any other OS even exists. These average users are stuck with
the constant warnings about updating for reasons of security , so they
update. Each update turns out to be a pain in the arse. They struggle
for solutions. Your demeaning techie attitude labels their effort at
    seeking security as whining.

You techie types have a real problem with the disrespect you show for
the vast majority of users who simply want an OS to work comfortably as
do their toasters and refrigerators. They know nothing of hardware or programming, but that doesn't mean they are dumb. Ignorance does not
mean dumb. Many of these ignorants are doctors, lawyers and other
professionals who do not have the inclination nor the time to screw
around with techie stuff. They're too busy with their jobs in the real
    world.

One other thing, the screw up artists of Redmond are techies. Techies
who seem to hardly know, or don't give a damn, how to do their job
right. So don't WHINE to me about techie superiority;.

Now you can use the "F" word and other's of your choice as you offer
one more ignorant and angry response to those of us who don't give a
damn about becoming disdainful techies such as yourself.

My wife got a new HP laptop with Windows 11 on it. A decent machine, but that has no bearing on the

I remember in '99 one time Microsoft was caught using an ActiveX
control in IE to record registration info from the Registries of people
visiting Windows Update. It was a scandal. How dare they?! Microsoft
promised to stop. Now they spy, install changes willy nilly, and
    virtually
claim ownership of your computer. And people think that's normal.
You own the hardware but Microsoft owns the operating system. If you
don't agree with the licensing terms then why did you install
Microsoft's Operating system? You should really be using something else.
There are 1000s of Linux distros so go and use one from the selection

You seem to have lots of problems with Windows and Apps running on them.
Why are you so stupid not able to learn how to use a computer?
You're an idiot who either works for MS or has drank the soma.

Go crawl back under your rock.

So what exactly are you trying to tell us? Are you saying that you like Microsoft Windows but don't like the rules set in the Licensing
    agreements? Please clarify.

I get the feeling that you don't like Linux otherwise you would be using
it and spend more time on Linux newsgroups.

Windows is owned by Microsoft and they can set the licensing terms and
users can accept and start using the OS or simply refuse to accept the

way. I, for one though, chose not to do so. I tweak the shit out of
Windows until it works acceptably well for me. With Windows 10 and 11
though, it's getting more and more difficult for me to do that and yes,
    that greatly upsets me.

What part of that don't you understand?

It's quite simple actually if you can use your brain a bit.

No, it's not that simple at all and you know it. But then, trolls like
    you always fain stupidity.

    Over and out. Hand. Etc.

They also want to eventually force you to pay fees in order to access
your own data. These two stunts mentioned above are a clear step in
    those directions.

I remember in '99 one time Microsoft was caught using an ActiveX
control in IE to record registration info from the Registries of people
visiting Windows Update. It was a scandal. How dare they?! Microsoft
promised to stop. Now they spy, install changes willy nilly, and
    virtually
claim ownership of your computer. And people think that's normal.

Wouldn't it be easier to make a tin foil pouch to keep it in?

Just slip the phone inside whenever you think it is spying on you.

There's no reason to read his posts. He's only trying to
feel clever by insulting others. Responding doesn't
help either of you, nor anyone else.

I leave mine turned off when I'm not using it. There's
talk that some cellphones can't be entirely turned off, but
I have a Tracfone from "TCL" and it powers off just fine.
The charge lasts for months. (I typically only use it about
once a month. I only bought it because public phones don't
exist anymore. $40 for the phone. $20 every 3 months to
    keep it working.)

In my wallet I keep charge cards in an aluminum flashing
sleeve. (Sold in rolls at lumber yards, it's thicker than foil but
can still be easily cut and folded.) It takes up almost no space
and protects in case there's some kind of near-field bug, now
that the cards can be communicated with through proximity.

A lot of people don't understand how these things work
and they don't want to. Meanwhile we get closer to an "armageddon
hack". Last week there was news that the US Federal Reserve
might have been hacked. I haven't seen any follow-up. It could
have been rumor. But the potential would be that hackers get
access to bank account numbers and personal info for nearly
    all Americans.

A couple of days ago, news came out of a massive hack of
health records because Nuance, now owned by Microsoft,
fired an employee and didn't also block his/her network access.

    https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/26/geisinger_nuance_microsoft_worker/

That's a dramatic reminder of how unstable this whole system
is. It only takes one employee to compromise vast databases.
People don't understand that because it's not something concrete
that we can see. And the extent of it is often kept secret. We
have hospitals paying massive ransoms to hackers because they
don't have the sense to take their network offline.

Remember the Melissa virus some years ago? It crippled business,
as it spread across white collar businesses via an MS DOC file bug.
That bug was the news headline. People were shocked.
It turned out that the culprit was just an immature office worker
who thought it would be clever to embed some script in a DOC. He
knew enough to know how to do that, but he didn't know enough
to know that his personal ID info is embedded in DOC files. He actually
had almost zero computer expertise. He just knew how to use MS
Word for his work. He got caught because his name and probably a
GUID ID was in every copy
of the malware DOC file. Today it's not just immature office workers. It's coding geniuses working in teams to serve governments or multi-million
dollar hacking enterprises. It's also our own government, creating and protecting 0-day hacks in the service of American/Israeli spying. Some
of the worst bugs (eternalblue/wannacry) have been developed by
the NSA! Your tax dollars at work.

But even with such news coming out almost daily, people like Hank
Rogers will still be ostriches. It's their only strategy. These are the
people who make fun of "worrywarts" and see themselves as enjoying
life to the fullest. Then when their car is towed from in front of a fire hydrant they define that as a "one-off". They didn't get towed, in their
minds, because they weren't relating to their life. They got towed
because in rare cases meteors hit the Earth. There's nothing we can
do about it, so we may as well enjoy life. :)

I don't understand what exactly is your problem. Can you specify exactly
what your problem is? Why do you detest Microsoft when you know very
well that all good software packages only run on Microsoft Windows.

Instead of spending time abusing people on these newsgroups, why don't
you write down your main problems so that a solution can be found for
you.We know that you are not capable of solving your own problems so we
can step in and try to help you and people like you to solve their problems.

Don't keep the problems to yourself because it will kill you at your
    ripe age of eighty something.
