Citing national security, US will ban Kaspersky anti-virus software in July https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/06/citing-national-security-us-will-ban-kaspersky-anti-virus-software-in-july/

That ban of all sales of Kaspersky antivirus software in the US starts in
July, according to reporting from Reuters. https://www.reuters.com/technology/biden-ban-us-sales-kaspersky-software-over-ties-russia-source-says-2024-06-20/

And according to a filing from the US Department of Commerce (PDF). https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2024-13695.pdf

The US believes that security software made by Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab represents a national security risk and that the Russian government could
use Kaspersky's software to install malware, block other security updates,
and "collect and weaponize the personal information of Americans," said US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

If you want it, then get it now, while you still can, because US businesses
and consumers will be blocked from buying new software from Kaspersky
starting on or around July 24, 2024, 30 days after the restrictions are scheduled to be published in the federal register.

Current users will still be able to download the software, resell it, and download new updates for 100 days.

Why would I want to get into this! I too have issues with it. I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft
    pole (as the saying goes).

The payment processor Kaspersky has been using, has been a problem
for some time. I don't know, over the last year or two, how many
people have been able to pay for materials with them. I could find
a thread, where a couple participants in the thread had some
amount of trouble with the payment processor.

The restrictions on commerce, likely affected payment processing
first. Flat out banning them, is just icing on an old cake.

If a company gets condemned by their location, doesn't that mean all
software and online service located in the USA must also get condemned
for logging their users since, gee, the NSLs (National Security Letters)
can force anyone to log specific POIs (Persons of Interest). Any
company operating within the Five Eyes countries is suspect of recording
your use of their software or service, because, gee, they can legally
coerced, so they surely must be doing it regardless of their privacy
    claims.

Since Kaspersky gets condemned due to their location, and companies
become associated to the actions of their gov't, then every program or
service located in a Five Eyes country is similarly condemned. Hell,
any company providing programs can do what is accused of Kaspersky,
especially without any proof what so ever of the accusation. Guilty due
to location. Hmm, doesn't that mean everything from any potentially
unfriendly nation to the USA or in any country whose gov't the USA
doesn't condone their actions just must be suspect.

Apparently innocent until proven guilty no longer applies in the USA.
Um, just where is Avast headquartered again? Czechware. Where is
EaseUS located? Chinaware. And Samsung? Koreanware. OMG, I just must uninstall WinAero Tweaker. It's also Russianware. Don't know Raymond
Hill's nationality, but if a USA citizen then I surely must get rid of
uBlock Origin since NSLs could force adding code to track every site I
visit. Gee, everything coming from Github is supect, too, since every unfounded and unproven accusation just must be true. But, of course,
the USA surely won't condemn its own leading privacy invader: Google.

Tunein has commercials for Goldco, a seller of gold, some of which say
that Russia and Iran have dumped the US dollar and it may be a sign that
in the future, having money in dollars will be a bad idea. But in fact
the US put sanctions on Russia and Iran (after Ukraine and whatever
dirty deeds Iran has been doing) and didn't let them aiui exchange local
money for dollars. The US dumped them, no the other way around, and it
doesn't mean the dollar is in trouble. So Goldco is a liar, and even if
I wanted gold, I wouldn't buy it from them.

So are those restritions the reason it's hard to pay for Kaspersky?
