There some riffs that well-established bands play as the curtains open
on a concert. They seem to arise from the background as the players and
their equipment come into view.
And the audience breaks into thunderous applause; because they recognise
them; these riffs have enriched their earlier days.
The band often expands the riff overtures from the studio version,
keeping them going but recognisable.
Some examples;
Genesis and "Dance On A Volcano"; Pink Floyd and "Wish You Were Here";
"Rolling Stones and "Gimme Shelter"; Led Zeppelin and "Kashmir"; The Who
and "Won't Get Fooled Again"; Dire Straits and "Once Upon A Time In The
West".
Once those riffs get into your head, they stay like beacons of hope or
statues on Easter Island; or, at least they do with my generation.
Do you want to make instant friends somewhere in the western world? Go
into a bar and start whistling one of them. You'll get rewarded.
