• Dell mouse problem

From Jim the Geordie@21:1/5 to All on Fri May 24 00:07:44 2024
Mouse suddenly started double (left) clicking
I had a look inside it looks as if the switches are sealed units.
    Anyone cured this problem?
    Restart doesn't work.

The switches go bad over time. They start bouncing which causes
multiple click events. The "buttons" are split halves of the plastic
shell, and the plastic fatigues over time causing it to approach and
even touch the switches, and that can cause double click events.
They're not built to last. Buy a new mouse.

Did you take it apart and clean it ?

Fluff gets in there and modifies the clearances inside the mouse.
    Fluff collects underneath the button-plates.

Switches are swap only. And especially if you bought two identical mice,
and one mouse has become a "donor" for the second mouse.

Tolerances are pretty tight. You can usually tell by touching
the plunger on the top of the switch, why it isn't working.
A "good" switch, the plunger is secure. A "worn" switch, the
plunger may wiggle a little bit, telling you the spring inside
isn't pressing upwards like it should. Or, the top of the plunger
is worn flat, and the plunger is not getting fully depressed.

If you have a mouse with side-buttons, you can check the
switch type on those. As the side-buttons may not be a
"priority item" inside the mouse, from the user point of
view. You really need the left-click to be working.

Switches can have three contacts. Normally Open, Normally Closed, Common.
The circuit could be using two of those electrical connections only,
or, it could use all three if it wanted. With your finger off the
button, the path from Normally Open to Common is open circuit.
With your finger off the button, the path from Normally Closed to Common
is a short circuit (switch closure). This gives engineers maximal
    flexibility when designing interface circuits.

I repair my old mice because I like them, they fit my hand, and I like
    to fix things.
Switches are 10 for a dollar from China or 10 for $5 USA if you don't
want to wait 3 months for the slow boat from China.
Little bits of an aluminum beverage can can be bent and super glued to
    the worn out plastic plunger.
A broken mouse tail can be cut off, shortened about 2", and re-soldered
to the mouse circuit board's plug.
