• Edge will not start

From R2D2@21:1/5 to All on Sun May 19 16:24:34 2024
    Hia folks

    I'm on Windows 10 pro 64.

Today Egde, on starting, Edge asked for my MS acount to continue
(never did that before); when I basically chose not right now, it
    crashed and refuses to start.

When I click on the icon nothing happens; there is no app or processes
on background, no error message nothing. I've tried repairing it,
unistall, delete the files on the prgram files\microsoft folder and
tnen reinstaling. Nothing works, clicking the icon to start simply
    does nothing.

    Anyone ever seen this?

Count yourself lucky and install Firefox. Why would you want
to use Edge? Microsoft are pushing people into their walled
garden of commercial fees. Nothing should be surprising. Removing
Edge was pretty much the first thing I do on starting a new Win10
system. Then I remove all the Windows Store crap/apps.

I don't *want* do use Edge, Firefox is my primary browser. But I do
tech support, so I have all 3 mani browsers installed. If Edge did
this to me today, it might very well do it to my users tomorrow.

Just found that, if I switch users on the PC, Edge works. It's only on
my user that it won't start.

That's what I would have guessed.

Being a serial-updater and a drama queen, MSEdge is going to
need elevation (somewhere) for its dance routine. Your
usage of a non-administrators-group account, led to some
extra drama with an attempt to elevate. It wants to install,
and the folder it installs to, needs authority for impersonation (TrustedInstaller account does the copy into the install place).

You would not believe how much crap litters the disk from this.
There could be a couple gigabytes of files from the install
    activity, cached this and that.

The browser only needs to run with a "regular" account.
But because it has to update itself constantly, the behavior smacks
of "I gotta be root all the time". Well, you don't gotta,
but it sure looks that way.

When the program restarts, it's at that point you hope
it is no longer elevated, and is just a regular user executable.
As that reduces the risks of exploits. The separate container
processes are supposed to help slow down an exploit getting
a foothold. It has a separate movie render process, so if
someone "fuzzes" the video decoder, the mess does not damage
    the "parent" process.

    Wow! Well done!
Could you kindly inform me how to reproduce that here. I'm heartily sick
of constantly seeing MS Edge and MS Edge WebView2 Runtime re-installed
whatever I do to try and scare them off.

Can't help you there... both are installed and the damn thing won't
    run.

In my Windows 10 Home x64 22H2, the uninstall option is grayed out
(disabled), because Microsoft does not provide an uninstall option.
There are components of Edge, like WebView2, that are used by other
    programs.

I don't recall Edge-C (Chromium variant Microsoft moved to after dumping
their EdgeHTML version) ever asking me to login. I don't much use Edge.
It is my backup web browser in case there is a problem using Firefox, my primary web browser, at a site, or a problem in Firefox. I have both
load about:blank as the home page. Only time either shows a non-blank
page is after an update announcing the update.

Both Edge and Firefox are configured to synchronize to their servers.
Allows using the same profile across multiple instances of the web
browsers across the same or different hosts. In Edge, click on the
profile icon at the left of the browser taskbar, or go to edge://settings/profiles. Mine is configured to sync. Perhaps you
configured Edge to not sync in which, yeah, I can see it nag about not connecting to your MS account, especially after an update when they're
shoving an ad page about their new wonderful update in your face. When
you load Edge, and it loads your home page, and after asking you to
login, has it asked again? Do you want Edge to sync to your MS account,
but status says "We can't sync to your account since we need to verify
that it's you", and the profile icon is orange?

What version of Edge are you now on? I'm on 125.0.2535.51 x64.

You have the Pro edition of Windows 10. That lets you define policies.
Could be you altered a policy, or some tweaker you use did it, that
affects the ability of Edge to sync. Microsoft considers us Home users
to be to stupid or dangerous to grant us access to policies (although
all are registry entries that can be defined or modified that way).
