• Turn Off Startup Reminders

From Jim H@21:1/5 to All on Wed Mar 13 16:03:11 2024
Every time my computer starts Windows reminds me to set up the syncing
of iCloud to my computer. I don't want to sync, but there's no way to
tell it not to bother me again, just a red X to exit the reminder.
Then it's all over again at next boot.

How can I kill it forever?

Look in settings and find notifications. Then see if windows tips is
enabled, or anything else that might be doing that.

Download autoruns. If possible, look for the old
Win32 version. The current verrsion is UWP/RT/Metro.
    I don't know if it's fully functional.

Autoruns lets you disable things set to start at boot.
It could also be used to figure out where the message
is coming from. If you're getting iCloud ads on Windows
then you must have installed some kind of Apple junk.

(And it is generally junk. Last I saw, iTunes installed
3 processes to run at boot.)

    No it doesn't.

    That word isn't iCloud.

You are referring to the "Backup" notification,
which wants you to deposit your goods into OneDrive,
a Microsoft cloud storage facility. iCloud on the
other hand, is an Apple cloud storage facility, and
like Dropbox, it can be *installed* on Windows (by *you*).
However, the iCloud notification at startup, cannot be turned off,
because there is no iCloud entry registered in
    Notifications. To suppress iCloud notifications,
you can turn off all Notifications. which is a good thing,
    since they're thinly veiled advertisements.

This is what the Backup Notification is advertising.

Normally, it would be the last two items, that would
    control random marketing popups.

Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows.

But there is also a "Backup Settings" in one of the
pictures on this page. And that could be the campaign
needing switchoff. These random marketing group projects,
have separate numbers associated with them, which is why
"they get to appear, then... you whack-a-mole". That's
a more aggressive version, of the previous thing we turned off.

    Maybe..
iCloud on Windows is a sync-able option.
    Multiple options:
    -  Photos, Documents, Bookmarks, Passwords...
files stored in iCloud sync(to/from) to the respective folder in File Explorer
    and
iCloud Calendar and Contacts(available for Windows using Outlook Desktop)

Does the word iCloud appear on my PC ?

This is the only match I get on a quick, filename scan (W11Home).

    WiFiCloudStore.dll

If I were to attach a phone to MyPhone or do something
else to entice a foreign ecosystem, then I bet that
would change. Or drop a few identifiers into Mail.App.

I usually remember intrusions when I see them, like
a Flappy Birds or a Disney icon. Or the Xerox file on
machines that have never seen nor heard of Xerox hardware
(that's an older example, WinXP era maybe).

You cannot sync to iCloud without an identifier. How
did the OS acquire that information, and from where ?
Some action must have been carried out by the user,
to suggest certain facilities exist in cloud space.

I have never connected a phone to my machine (I don't
have a phone of the correct type for this), and
conversely, I have never been asked to sync anything
to Dropbox or Mega or iCloud or Google. Whereas if I
did happen to use the Mail.App and entered a gmail
detail there, then that would raise the possibility of
synchronization to an external drive service.

The symptom description, a Notification entry that does
not have a registered control, that's symptomatic of Apple
software. They refuse to follow conventions when visiting
a foreign ecosystem. That's just the way they are. That's
how I can tell, if/when an op reports "I don't have an
iCloud entry to switch off", that's how I will know the individual
installed an iCloud.App or got an iCloud.exe installer
    from somewhere.

    Remove iCloud from Startup.

    or

Just go to Control Panel/ Programs and Features/ iCloud, and try iCloud
repair, and if that doesn't work then uninstall the pest.

Settings > System > Notifications > Notifications for apps and other senders >- toggle slider off for iCloud
    or
    - access iCloud item while enabled(slider = on) and selectively disable >specific items

Task Manager > Startup apps(5th icon left hand, veritcal navigation bar)
    - Disable iCloud 'startup' item

If you wish to globally turn off Notifications
    - Settings > System > Notifications
    - toggle slider off for Notifications

Task Manager and disabling 4 different running iCloud programs/apps,
plus a reboot, did the trick. Thank you!!!
