We (my wife and I) prefer the app.

It used to be a normal Windows program, but now it's a UWP/Metro/ Modern/<whatever> 'app'. I normally call these "Fisher-Price apps",
because they normally are less capable or/and less user-friendly than
normal Windows programs, but the WhatsApp app is not bad, it has
essentially the same functionality as the old WhatsApp program.

Install the Phone Link app on the PC and run it from there. It mirrors
the phone layout with the convenience of being able to use the
physical keyboard. (Can use it for all your other phone apps as well.)

The Phone Link app requires a Microsoft Account - at least it tells
you to "Sign in with your Microsoft account" and gives no other option -,
which might be a no-no for some (many? most? all? :-)) people.

Easier to just mirror the phone onto your screen where your six inch phone
will be as tall as your monitor (which can be a foot or taller in height).

Then you can easily operate the phone with your mouse keyboard and voice.

I use the Android direct dialer so that WhatsApp only knows contacts I call
on WhatsApp. The rest of my contacts remain unknown to WhatsApp that way.

Does the WhatsApp direct dialer work on the Windows platform?

You *can* update, but you don't *have* to update, you can just freshly install the app. The old program is totally seperate anyway.
(Afterwards, you'll probably want to uninstall the old program from
'Programs and features' in Control Panel.)

Just go to <https://www.whatsapp.com/download/>, click on the 'Get it
from Microsoft' button and you'll be directed to the right place in the Microsoft Store (no you don't need a Microsoft Account).

That's exactly what I did. Well, I first installed on my Android phone
to use during a trip overseas, where all relatives used and suggest it
    to me. It worked fine.

When I got back to the U.S., I installed it on my Windows 11 desktop,
and it also worked just fine, bringing over all my 'chat's' and media
from my Android phone. I did not have to have a Microsoft account.

Well it was a whatsapp page where I got the version I'm trying to
install, but I will try deleting the current version first.

What's in there now is listed as v.2.2326.10 and 155MB, and is labeled "outdated" right in the Programs and Features listing.

Says the same thing as previous times "Couldn't update automatically**.
To continue installing whatsapp, click update and install the latest
verion", and clicking Update just takes one to https://web.whatsapp.com/desktop/windows/release/x64/WhatsAppSetup.exe
and downloads another copy the same date and length as the previous 4
copies, one of which I was using when I got the message in quotes. So
it's trying to run me around in a circle.

from Microsoft' button and you'll be directed to the right place in the >Microsoft Store (no you don't need a Microsoft Account).

But I just did what it told me and didn't go to <https://www.whatsapp.com/download/>. So I tried that and like you say
it took me to the MS store and it did install and open, but two
    problems.
    1) Found it-- Not within settings. (It says on the phone tap Menu or Settings and select Linked Devices, but I keep looking and I can't find
    any Linked Devices. )

    2) The windows version is listed in Programs and Features with the same
length, same version as before, and again says Outdated, even though I uninstalled that earlier, like I said, and saw that line disappear, so
this is a new but outdated copy.
This is still true, even after I successfully linked it. But before
it didn't give instructions or a QR code. Go figure.

    Thanks for the encouragement.

Simply put, apps are installed from the Microsoft Store, programs are

This is still true, even after I successfully linked it. But before
it didn't give instructions or a QR code. Go figure.

    Thanks for the encouragement.

You're welcome, but you would have had no/less problems if you had

Downloaded it 3 or 4 times too.

    windows 10 Home fully updated.

I would like to have both but I've given up on the PC. I have no
    problem with the phone app.

You *can* update, but you don't *have* to update, you can just freshly >> >> >install the app. The old program is totally seperate anyway.
(Afterwards, you'll probably want to uninstall the old program from
'Programs and features' in Control Panel.)

Just go to <https://www.whatsapp.com/download/>, click on the 'Get it >> >>
Well it was a whatsapp page where I got the version I'm trying to
install, but I will try deleting the current version first.

What's in there now is listed as v.2.2326.10 and 155MB, and is labeled
"outdated" right in the Programs and Features listing.

Says the same thing as previous times "Couldn't update automatically**. >> >> To continue installing whatsapp, click update and install the latest
verion", and clicking Update just takes one to
    https://web.whatsapp.com/desktop/windows/release/x64/WhatsAppSetup.exe
and downloads another copy the same date and length as the previous 4
copies, one of which I was using when I got the message in quotes. So
it's trying to run me around in a circle.

from Microsoft' button and you'll be directed to the right place in the >> >> >Microsoft Store (no you don't need a Microsoft Account).

But I just did what it told me and didn't go to
<https://www.whatsapp.com/download/>. So I tried that and like you say >> >> it took me to the MS store and it did install and open, but two
    problems.
    1) Found it-- Not within settings. (It says on the phone tap Menu or >> >> Settings and select Linked Devices, but I keep looking and I can't find >> >> any Linked Devices. )

Yes, on the phone - on the *main* page - select the 'Chats' tab and
the tap the three-vertical-dots icon. *There* you will see the 'Linked
    devices' menu item.

No response. Did you get this part working?

    Sorry. Yes.

    2) The windows version is listed in Programs and Features with the same >> >> length, same version as before, and again says Outdated, even though I
uninstalled that earlier, like I said, and saw that line disappear, so
this is a new but outdated copy.

It seems you again downloded and installed the old 'Outdated' program.

When I clicked on the word Download, it went to the MS Store and it
chose what version to give me.

Sigh! I told you to go to <https://www.whatsapp.com/download> and
click on the 'Get it from Microsoft' button, so *NOT* on the green
'Download' button (which probably does the same,

Oops. I have bad short term memory, and could well have forgotten to
look for "Get it from Microsoft".

    but you should follow
instructions (or do things by yourself without further bothering us)).

I can see why you're annoyed.

The "Get it from Microsoft" box is mostly black, not like other useful
boxes, but I just clicked on it and it went to the MS store in a way
that looked just like what happened when I clicked on the green
Download. so I got the same result.

Just uninstall it again 'Programs and features' in Control Panel and
do *not* download or/and install anything else, because you now have the
    new app.

You're saying if I have the right app on the phone, I don't need the the
program in the PC? Surely that could not be.

Sigh! Not the phone app, but the *Windows* app. Since Windows 8,
Windows has programs and apps and they're quite different animals.

That I did not know, not at all, and I didn't understand when you
brought it up in the last post.

Simply put, apps are installed from the Microsoft Store, programs are >installed from some installation package you download (mostly .exe
files, but can be other file types). Don't mix them up.

    I'll do my best.

Anyhow, whatsapp appeared on the computer, complete with a list of my
prior chats and a menu for Contacts and even Non-Contacts. I dont'
think I've ever seen a list of Non-Contacts before, not on the phone. I
    like that.

(Please try to understand the difference between a (Windows)
    *program* and *app*.)

I think I know the difference between a windows program and phone-app.
In fact, I dislike it when some, including it seems MS itself, refer to
    PC programs as "apps".

Good, so don't mix them up.

    I'll do my best.

There was a time when I made a mistake making an airline reservation,
and they only permitted Whatsapp on the PC to contact them, and it took
me so long (more than 20 minutes or whatever) trying to set it up (which
I failed to do) that the reservation expired and when I tried to make
another, there were no seats. I had to change airlines. So now that
it's installed, I don't think that will happen again, plus there are
plenty other uses of whatsapp on the laptop, or even the desktop PC.

Thanks a lot for your help, your patience, and your impatience.

Glad to hear that you got it working!

As to the 'Non-contacts': There's a little three-line (of different
length) icon at the top right of the 'Chats' pane. Click on that and
you'll see that you have several sort options for your chats. I sort on 'Contacts', so only my Contacts are listed with the most-recently
    contacted at the top.

You're welcome, especially to my impatience. I've a lot of that, so I
don't mind giving some of it away.

Glad you got it working. That's what matters.

Happy 'chatting'. We say 'appen', app-ing in English. The 'App' part
of 'WhatsApp' has become a verb and a noun in our country, much like
