Is there any way to download an age-restricted redditt video
that the yt-dlp won't download without creating a reddit account?

You can watch the video. https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/13dthoi/full_video_of_the_russian_surrendering_and_work/

But how do you download it? blob:https://www.reddit.com/6d72fd64-2e73-45dc-8270-09467ccc6810

I don't want to create a reddit account just to download this
video which is a famous video of a soldier (understandably) surrendering
to a drone moments after three of his buddies, one by one, are injured
by drone-dropped grenades to the actual point that they commit suicide. https://www.reddit.com/d0b68b1b-8d2e-4d4e-b58a-b9fb54f90157

The yt-dlp downloader didn't download it when I tried just now.

Confirm you are on the latest version using yt-dlp -U

The latest yd-dlp (built today) did not download that reddit video.
Neither did NewPipe version 0.24.1 from https://newpipe.net/ on Android. Neither did ClipGrab version 3.9.7 on Windows with the 2023.06.21 yt-dlp included.

How do you download age-restricted Reddit videos on Windows, Linux & Android? What downloader do you use to get them without needing to make an account?

I would go through my Linux installs and find one.

Linux tends to "freeze" a version, with the distro release.
A 20.04 would have a different version than 22.04 for example.
Debian removed the "-U" option before putting the software
in the tree. That's a more or less standard TreeHerder philosophy,
to prevent Exploitation via Update (tip over the updater site,
    serve malware to everyone).

This is why, the other day, I got myself a 23.04 DVD, so I
could test the same version Carlos was using. That was the laziest
way I could think of doing it.

Otherwise, you do what you always do, use www.archive.org
when you need a time machine. Not everything is in there,
but I've escaped many binds using it.

There was a new version of yt-dlp released 6/22. With it, there was no
error message downloading the Reddit video.
With some GUI Downloaders like ClipGrab, the newest version of yt-dlp is downloaded automatically. With the one I use, TVDownloader (Aka YoutubeVideoDownloader), I download it from the GitHub Web site (https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releases/latest), rename it to youtube-dl.exe, and place it in the TVDownloader folder.

    I'm glad you do!

Is it normal for the yt-dlp to be updated two days in a row?

It is relatively normal in the open software world. Depending on the
project, you may be able to download the current development version. It
also depends on how they trigger a recompile of the windows version, but
the source can change from minute to minute.

Debian removed the "-U" option before putting the software
in the tree. That's a more or less standard TreeHerder philosophy,
to prevent Exploitation via Update (tip over the updater site,
    serve malware to everyone).

Other reason: the system has python 3.6, the yt-dlp devs wants 3.7, so
updating it with -U produces a non working tool.

Now I updated it from a different repository, so I have the new version.
To get the old version, I would have to force install of the "older" repository. Then I would probably rename the tool, and then install from
    the newer repo.

As to how to do it in Windows, some times download pages offer
dowloading of different versions. Download the old, rename, download the
    new.

The OP didn't ask for this help and I saw all the bickering on the other
thread so I'm glad the Apple folks don't know about this one - but if the
OP wants to get past that ffmpeg problem, I just tested a solution for him.

    Just put ffmpeg.exe (I also added ffplay.exe & ffprobe.exe) in the
yt-dlp.exe folder (you need the right ffmpeg that doesn't need a dll).

I tried it and it doesn't give that error about not merging the two files.

I got my ffmpeg.exe (long ago) from http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/ but
to be helpful, I just tested it for the OP but it no longer seems to exist.

I guess that makes sense because ffmpeg used to be patent protected.
But now even the ffmpeg site can point directly to a binary for it.

Googling, it seems that you can now get the compiled binaries from them. https://ffmpeg.org/download.html

Good luck and thank you for asking a good technical question!

Quite a few packages use a "runt" ffmpeg, which is mainly used
for its multiplexer/demultiplexer. This allows picking a sound track
from somewhere, adding a video track and placing them in a final container. Since no edits are going on, the codec for audio and video is set to "Copy", and no fresh compression is going on. By only having a fraction of the
normal functions, the executable does not have to be as big.

Full FFMPEG can be quite a bit larger (especially the statically compiled one).

This is why you have to be careful, when examining your machine
for the multitude of "ffmpeg.exe" on it. Don't "throw out your good copy", thinking the runt version is the good one.

There are actually two graphics projects - FFMPEG and LibAV. They
competed for a while. I do not know what the final disposition of
the LibAV team is. There's still working going on, on the
FFMPEG project. It really is, a Swiss Army Knife. Using scripts,
it is quite possible you could implement a complete non-linear video
editor, just using FFMPEG calls. It's that powerful. You can do
fade ins and fade outs. You can double the frame rate (interpolation).
