Do you have another program that depends on Adobe, and when you use that program, that programs installs Adobe Reader?

I have the adobe acrobat writer which has been on the pc for a decade.
It works fine. I did install the reader once, a few years ago though.
Just to read a newer pdf format but I've since moved to non-Adobe apps.

What is the default program for PDF files.

The default reader is Foxit Reader 9.3 for *.pdf files.
The default reader is gsview64.exe for *.ps *.eps & *.prn files.

I only use Ghostscript/GhostView to remove print & editing permissions.

    There are several types of
Files used by the Adobe reader.

I only know of these. Do you know of any others?

    pdf Portable Document Format file
    ps PostScript file
    eps Encapsulated PostScript file
prn PostScript or Encapsulated PostScript print files

Have you removed all of the file
associations that refer to the Adobe Reader.

I checked all the file associations above and none are set to that.

What about the defaults in your browse, newsreader, or email program.

Browsers are always set to download all file types other than images.
Email and newsreader also set to download as they're lousy viewers.

It's something sneaky that only started happening after the last Microsoft Windows update which I suspect turned back on one of the "scheduled tasks"
that I typically turn off by shutting service - but I don't remember which
one. (As an aside, someday I'll implement a system log of my changes.)

What I deleted is the Acrobat writer updater which maybe was misbehaving. C:\Program Files\Acrobat8\Acrobat\AdobeUpdateManager.exe
And I deleted everything in the Adobe Common Files directory too.
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe
That's where the Adobe updater and its services was located. %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\armsvc.exe
    %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\adobearm.exe

I also wiped out all the Adobe keys that seemed to be updating in the
system registry & I ran this tool to permanently disable Adobe updates. https://www.raymond.cc/blog/quickly-check-change-critical-software-auto-update-status/

Also I disabled the Adobe scheduled tasks in taskschd.msc.
taskschd.msc > Task Schedule Library > Adobe Acrobat Update Task > Disable
And the Adobe Acrobat Update Service too.
services.msc > Adobe Acrobat Update Service > Properties > Disabled

The registry is always the hardest to deal with because you don't know what
it will effect when you mess with it, where the main keys seem to be in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Adobe\

Some of the keys I deleted were, for example. \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Adobe\Adobe ARM\1.0\ARM\Products\Reader

What anything is doing in a directory called "WOW" is confusing though.

Anyway, I think I probably killed it. But now I have to wait and see
because it comes back after every automatic Windows update it seems.

    KenW
As a test, I've uninstalled Adobe Reader DC Classic - Classic is the
    non-cloud optional DC version.
Any attempts to open PDF files after assigning PDF to FoxIt or Windows
own built in PDF reader do not yield any prompts to install/use Adobe
    Reader DC.
Any system attempts to update Adobe DC(Startup, Apps, etc) are not
present and without having cleaned the registry or deleting orphaned
folders left over after Adobe Reader DC uninstallation.

Retested, again with installing Adobe Reader DC Continuous(the cloud
version). After a day, uninstalled that, like after DC Classic removal reassigning PDF to other PDF capable applications/apps, and not cleaning registry or deleting orphaned folders no prompts to install/use Adobe
    Reader DC.

Something else is in play on the op's device.

That's a good idea which I hadn't mentioned that I have used Wise snapshot
& the hunter killer Rivo Uninstaller on the Adobe product in the past.

I think I've mixed a bit too many of these since I keep Advanced
Uninstaller running in the background, and the ZSoft Uninstaller too.

I used to use the IOBit Uninstaller but it advertised me to death so I
killed it. But sometimes I wonder if these hunter/killer automatic
    installers conflict with each other.

Still, it only seems to happen after a Windows update.

Earlier today I recalled that auto-updating from Reader to Pro was an
issue in the Enterprise community on Win10/Server 2019.
    - I queried a group of Admin's(a few hundred members) in the Enterprise communities that are responsible for multiple thousands of Windows 10,
11, Server 2019/2022 using Adobe Reader DC Classic or Continuous.
12 responses - all indicated in one form or another an old problem with
Reader DC Continous(not the non-cloud Classic) update that caused
attempts to upgrade to paid version
    - no longer an issue
    - which probably coincides with the 2 yr old article initial post and
at the rate of deployment in some Enterprise even the last few
posts(reasonably useless contributions) 6 months old.
Smoke and mirrors relative to the op's issue

Querying that group was one also one of the reasons I tested uninstalling
Adobe DC Classic and Continuous on Win10/11 in an attempt to duplicate
the op's issue(still, hours later - nada attempt to force install DC
    anything)

It's not just me. Everyone should killfile you. You waste their time.
You always post as if you know something but you always know nothing.

You waste everyone's time each time you post.
Most of your posts are about your personal problems besides.

It's the waste of time that you constantly cause everyone that I decry.

Anyway, I haven't seen Adobe Acrobat Reader DC come back.
I think removing the updaters and all the registry entries and removing the schedyuled tasks is what worked as a group but I don't know if any would
    have worked alone.

These are some of the updater files I removed with the Adobe directory. %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\armsvc.exe
    %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\adobearm.exe

These are some of the scheduled tasks I removed that Adobe added.
taskschd.msc > Task Schedule Library > Adobe Acrobat Update Task > Delete services.msc > Adobe Acrobat Update Service > Properties > Delete

These are some of the Adobe Windows-on-Windows registry keys I removed. Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Adobe\Adobe ARM\1.0\ARM\Products\Reader

I also ran this remove adobe updater registry file for regedit to fix. https://raymondcc.r.worldssl.net/Adobe_Reader_DC_Updates.zip

That zip archive contains two files.
    Adobe_Reader_DC_Disable_Updates.reg
    Adobe_Reader_DC_Enable_Updates.reg

    The Adobe_Reader_DC_Disable_Updates.reg does this
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat
    Reader\DC\FeatureLockDown]
    "bUpdater"=dword:00000000

    The Adobe_Reader_DC_Enable_Updates.reg undoes that.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat
    Reader\DC\FeatureLockDown]
    "bUpdater"=-

There are a few more things I did with hunter killer apps like
Rivo Uninstaller, Advanced Uninstaller and the ZSoft Uninstaller.

It only seems to happen after a Windows update so I will probably have to
wait for a while unless it comes back sooner.

Good advice! That's also a wonderful way to get an unwanted copy of

    Yes.

If it was that ridiculously obvious & simple I wouldn't have asked.
You always post ridiculously simple and obvious "help" as a troll.

You won't be able to help me or even yourself if that's your advice.

There's something inside the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC installation
setup, which I can find a whole bunch but I'm digging up each one.

It's either in the registry or in the task scheduler, probably both.
I've already wiped out a few of the updater files & regedit entries.

All that is too far above your pay grade so please don't respond.

Now you've shot the messenger, what's next?
