Probably not, but in this vale of tears nothing is certain.

You most likely _will_ get an annoying prompt next time you insert
it, telling you to repair the thumb drive. Dealing with that will

I've gotten a similar message, using USB Safely Remove, a lot, and I
never knew what to do with it.

Yesterday, after all my questions in this thread, I forgot to use Forced
    Stop, and just unplugged it.

But you have me wondering so I plugged in the external HDD (WD Elements)
just now to see what happened, and it didn't say a word. Worked fine.

take longer than just properly ejecting the USB stick in the first
    place.

LOL I can imagine that too.

It's good that it's working. I've been using the laptop daily for 14
months and, other than the original disk image, finally got around to
backing it up. I hope you are all belatedly proud of me.

Another problem arose with XXCopy, which I guess is worth starting a new
    thread for. So I will.

We like people who plan ahead.

The next level, is whether it was a good plan or not.

A couple times at work, nobody tested the backups to
see if they worked under restore. In one case, it was our own backup
software, written by our own employees, and the fools
never tested that restore worked :-) The scene in the hallway,
between the two managers was... interesting. One of
the managers had his "not impressed" face on.

That's how I learned you're supposed to test that the backups can be restored.

That little scene in the hallway.

I had the same problem, with our home-grown "data recovery" software.
One of the employees needed a "rush job", and I volunteered to help
out. And my first problem ? Data recovery software untested, and didn't
work. So Step 0 of my little project was "correct source code and recompile"
so I could attempt a recovery. And it is "not nice" to be doing that
on a time critical project. It's like preparing to put the spare
tire on the car, and the scissor jack has no handle.

Windows may do a silent check on it.

Another thing that the system might do is, when an usb media is not used
for a long time, the system could pseudo-close it preemptively, so that
if you suddenly remove it, nothing happens, and if you suddenly do
something with it, it works instantly. Not saying that they do, but that
they might have such a functionality.
