Just wanted to report my experience. I now have both SSKs with their
installed HDs configured as S: and volume name SSK. My overnight
unattended batch runs without complaint even thought one drive is 3TB
and the other 4TB. Only one HD is attached at a time. During a week the
batch runs various data backups, AV scans, and a Macrium Reflex image.

After several exchanges I find that the designation of both external
drives return to their first drive letters (E and X) instead of staying
at the preferred S for both. The volume name I assigned (SSK_Dock)
continues to appear with the original drive letters.

Any suggestions to make the S assignment for both permanent?

I still don't understand why it's not. I have several USB sticks and
external hard drives that I've assigned drive letters to, and they
    have all stick.
