We have been having a discussion about BBS network technologies in
We are discussing what protocols were used between BBSs and what
networks they formed.
Do you have any input that you would like to share with people that know less about BBSs?
FTN Standards were absolutely ubiquitous and used for many spin off nets, but is a much deeper rabbit hole than one might think, as there were a few different options for connection between two nodes.
A great many cities or other small geographic areas had their own area nets either piggybacking Fido, or just using similar setup and/or the same programs.
There were alternatives like QWK based networking, and just about any other contemporary message network/technology was likely gated to some BBS or collection of BBSes SOMEWHERE.
Before the average user had access to the Internet, and before the WWW was a thing, Bulletin boards WERE the online world for many. As a result, people got creative.
