• Fell down a C64 rabbit hole...

From JoE DooM@21:1/230 to All on Tue Feb 8 13:45:14 2022
So the last couple months, I've fallen down a c64 rabbit hole. It started
with me playing with emulators and re-learning 6502 assembly etc...

then I started a Youtube channel and did some tutorial vids on game
programming and asm, and then I made a c64 conversion of Wordle... and
    that kinda exploded. haha

If anyone is interested in checking it out, it's called Not A Wizard and
    is at: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8M0VmsO-i-8aDJNJH9NWXg

Google loves their super social media friendly URLs.. haha

Oh and I now have a real c64 and a TheC64 as well as the emulators which
I tend to use for making vids and playing around on..

    Fun times :D

Sounds interesting, I will need to check a few of your videos after work tonight. I am still falling down the hole myself. Never had a C64 in the day, we had an Apple II, but the recent discovery and purchase of TheC64 has got
    me very interested.

I just bit the bullet and bought a recapped C64. So excited. Now, on to a composite monitor and some peripherals...

Right on, aLPHA - I've found that the C= community is really great... while it sucks, theres a couple awesome groups on FB that are VERY knowledgable about C= stuff...

Did you get any accessories? The best, IMO, is an Ultimate II+ - which is an SD2EIC and several other THINGS, at once... but an SD2EIC is great, and JiffyDOS makes things much quicker w/ better command line options for whipping around C= file systems easier.

Glad you took the plunge. I got into the C= demoscene and historical phreaking/hacking software - pretty fun to relive and learn things that were before my time.

Let us know what you dive into as you go... :P

Ah, now you have me thinking about the beloved Compunet...

    :) TheC64 is pretty cool.

I used Apple IIs at school, and friends had c64s, but my first computer
was quite late in life and was an Amiga.

I'm hoping that with the 6502 programming, I'll be able to make stuff
portable between c64's, Apple IIs, Ataris, and BBC Micros.

    That's the dream. :)

hehe. It's been a lot more popular than I had anticipated.

Drop by in the comments of the vids and say hi if you haven't already :)

Just had a look.. I have to confess I don't really use the carousel mode
and just go straight into c64 mode.

Their whole wiki article has no pictures at all. haha If the screenshot
on the banner is anything to go by, it doesn't look any different.

I don't understand the point of PCU.. reading the description, it lets
you use SD cards and other non USB stick devices?

There's mention of 7 different main modes, but no screenshots, so I'm a
bit confused as to whether they are functional or asthetic changes. haha

    How do you use it?

I can understand this view - The website does a really bad job of 'selling' exactly what the project is and what it adds beyond the usual Carousel.

Firstly, if you mostly enjoy the C64 mode anyway, it probably won't add much value for you.

Above and beyond the normal Carousel, the sorts of things which I've found usful are:

    1. You can have more games installed. The normal Carousel has a limit. PCU lets you go beyond this, and have game categories and so on.

    2. The project has available some pre-baked USB images which lots of games on them, all set to go with PCU. Again, the website doesn't help here - You really have to dig quite deep to find them!

    3. There are also modes to spin up different types of emulators - not just C64. Obviously, the Amiga ones push the hardware a bit.

The PCU threads on the C64 forum help a bit with explaining. Unfortunately, to detangle it you need to read a combo of the web site and the different bits of information on the forum.

Hopefully this has helped explain it at least a little bit!

it does! thank you. They need to hire you as their marketing person
because that was far clearer than their website haha.

I might check it out now. ;)

One thing I want to do is find a better USB joystick for it, because the standard one is a bit ... substandard..

Actually, it'll be interesting to see if they make new ones for TheAmiga
and if they do, they should be compatible.
