Coming up... The Cure in Dallas. My wife is going to They Might be Giants then it's off to see Mike and the Mechanics.

Later in the year, Lost 80's Live. It's an annual show of 12-15 bands or artists from the 80's that play 3 or 4 of their popular songs. In the past we've seen Book of Love, Naked Eyes, When in Rome UK, Dramarama, Annabell from Bow Wow Wow, The Tubes, The Vapors, the guy from Information Society, Trans-X, Missing Persons, Wang Chung, Flock of Seagulls...plus a ton more I've probably forgotten. Tickets are cheap for good seats too. You get 4-5 hours of entertainment and you get to see a lot of bands that would probably never tour otherwise because they only had 3-4 hits most people know, or remember.

I'm hopeful that Steve Hackett will add more US dates for Foxtrot at 50 for the end of the year or 2024.

Who are you looking forward to seeing?

They'd be cool to see, though I'm not familiar with a whole lot of their music.

I like concerts, though I don't see concerts very often. And many of the bands I like are older and probably aren't touring anymore or have members who have passed away.

I was never much of a concert person. I saw 3 concerts in the UK before moving to the US. We were at a Metal Shop (hair band/arena rock cover band) show and they did a Poison song. My wife they might be cool to see. 10 minutes later I had Poison tickets, supported by Cheap Trick. It sort of went from there. Since then I've traveled to Portland, OR, Northampton, MA and St Louis, MO to see Steve Hackett, Charlotte, NC to seee Genesis, Mark Knopfler in both Dallas and Phoenix, Pet Shop Boys and New Order in Seattle, WA, Jean Michel Jarre in New York, Houston, Dallas, and San Jose, A-ha in Los Angeles. Also in Dallas have seen OMD, Joe Jackson, Colin Hay, The Monkees, Erasure, Howard Jones supported by Men Without Hats and opened by All Hail the Silence - great synth group.

I'm sure there's some more that I've forgotten about. And before people think I'm rich, being able to fly off all over the country to see these bands, I have a Southwest Airlines credit card - everything I buy goes on the card that gets paid off at the end of the month. Usually costs about $20 for the 2 of us, round trip.

So you ever go to see tribute or cover bands? Dallas has a huge list of cover bands and tributes. A good thing and a bad thing, makes it difficult for original bands to get their foot in the door. Not that there's much good music these days anyway, kiddie bands, manufacturerd and computer generated pop and autotune trap has destroyed music.

I'm jealous that you got tickets to see The Cure. Sadly, their Denver show is at probably the worst venue in the area, which has *really* wide wings, and
if you don't get tickets *early* then it's just a miserable show. By the time
I got in, all of the good seats were gone. We saw them at RiotFest a few
years ago and they were absolutely brilliant! A really good show.

We've got tickets next month for Placebo down in Denver and They Might Be Giants up here in Fort Collins.

Haha, fair enough, you got me there. I'm not a big Cure fan, more my wife's thing but I don't dislike their stuff. TMBG were never on my radar. I think it's an American thing so she's off to see them with a friend. I'm a big Genesis fan so Mike and the Mechanics is a natural. You probably know more stuff of theirs than you realize.

For not being much of a concert person, I think you've seen more concerts than I have. :) I've seen Rush a few times, Paul McCartney twice, Blue Man Group a couple times, Paul Simon once, Mark Knopfler once, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra once.

Ah yes, I saw Rush. A friend took me for my birthday when they came into Dallas even tho I had to pay for the tickets lol. Talking of birthdays, I saw Phil Collins a few years ago on my birthday. He didn't bring me a cake tho :)

How was the Paul Simon show? I wasn't a big McCartney fan. Never into the Beatles. I found Wings music to be somewhat basic and uninteresting. The late 70's and early 80's saw syncpop and new wave and he was playing Mull of Kintyre.

Back in England, my first concert was A-ha. Genesis twice in 1992 and Dire Straits the same year. Lisa Stansfield opened for Genesis at the first concert. Lyle Lovett and his Big Band and Was Not Was opened for Dire Straits... segway...

Leeland Sklar is touring with Lovett, he was Phil Collins bassist for years. He wrote a book "Everybody Loves Me". I started to read the intro and thought, I'm going to look forward to reading this book. Lovett had 3 nights in Dallas so I went down and waited around for about 4 hours, meanwhile I decided to start reading the book...and as I flipped through the pages...it was pictures. Just pictures of people flipping off! There's a story behind it, but anyway...

Lee came out and I shouted, can I have an autograph please, he smiled when he saw me waving his book around. I was the only person waiting, and I didn't even have a ticket for the show! Anyway, I said, you have to flip me off first, which he did with a "f..k you". I gave him a "f..k you back" with a flip and we had a nice conversation. We laughed about the lack of anything to read in the book. He signed it "To Nigel. Few words, but best wishes". He was really cool and wish I had more time to chat.

I've got a few other things signed too. Joe Jackson was in the tour bus before be was off the stage! We waited around and after everyone else had gone I asked someone if he'd sign a couple of albums for us. They took them on the tour bus and came back signed! Paul from OMD signed The Pacific Age. Andy wouldn't come out the bus, he was too tired...not surprising.

Colin Hay signed my concert tickets because I already picked up a signed album from the merch table. I have a couple of Jean Michel Jarre signed items, and several Steve Hackett items too.

I'm not one of those star struck people or celeb followers, I just think it's nice to have something unique that I can hand down.

I also met a bunch of the bands I listed in Lost 80's Live. They had a meet & greet with the money going to charity so I got a Tubes album signed, and a couple of Wang Chung albums. Since Fee Waybill was there, I had him sign one of the Wang Chung albums before he said "but I'm with The Tubes" at which point I provided the album :)

Probably the cream of the crop was meeting Thomas Dolby, such a pioneer. I have Golden age of Wireless signed but it got a little smudged.

I'm friends with members of a few cover bands here in Dallas. They're all very talented and wonder why they don't do it for a living, then I realize, they like to eat!

I'd love to be in a cover band but I just don't have the time to put into the practice that's needed. While I can play by ear, sort of, I have a hard time picking out the nuances especially for multi layers synth songs. I thought a Pet Shop Boys tribute would be fun. They have a ton of songs that everyone knows and I could probably recreate the majority of the songs on my Korg Kronos, but it's time.

I can't even sing so that doesn't help either.

I know I've heard their songs that were played on the radio, though with They Might Be Giants, I remember hearing their "Particle Man" and "Constantinople" because the TV show 'Tiny Toons' made cartoon music videos for those, and I used to watch that show when I was a kid (early 90s)..

Phil Collins would be good to see.

Back in the day maybe. He's passed it now. During the Genesis show he had 2 backing singers. He just can't carry it like he used to. It got old real quick. That's what ploughing through 3 marriages including a gold-digging bitch will do you. I think he got drunk and fell off a ladder or something.

How was the Paul Simon show?

I thought it was pretty good. It was around 2005, I think, and I remember him playing some of his older Simon & Garfunkel songs and some from his Graceland album etc..

Graceland was a fantastic album. He said himself that the song Graceland was probably the best song he's ever written. I'm not so sure but it has some great lines in it. Another good story teller with his songs and music.

I think that's the thing about it - It's music that's easy to listen to and fun when you feel like that kind of thing. I liked the Beatles too. I suppose I have a range of music I like..

I'm the same. I have expanded somewhat. I did an oldies show on KXEZ 92.1 here in Dallas with another Brit, called The British Invasion, we did 2 hours of British oldies so I got more of an appreciation doing that than anything else. the Beatles were in the right place at the right time I think. It's not as if they were amazing musicians, maybe with the exception of Ringo, but they could put songs together.

It would have been fun to see some of those bands back then. I was a bit young to be going to concerts at that time though.

Well...I'm not giving my age away on here...but I'm sure I've mentioned it before somewhere.

That's cool. :) I actually don't have any signed concert tickets..

I'll try and get you one next time :)

Yeah, I know he did some good stuff (one song of his I can think of is 'He Blinded Me With Science'; I don't remember offhand what else he did).

Hyperactive I think was his other big one and Windpower.

I play guitar...some. I know the major chords and a few minor ones, as me to play a B7msus4 and I have no chance :)

I also play the keyboards but lack the accuracy and a lot of the dexterity. I can sort of the the intro to Firth of Fifth by Genesis but is sounds very choppy.

Back in England I took some drum lessons maybe 4-5 before I ended up moving and never picked it up again. I do have a kit and bash away from time to time but I don't really enjoy it as much as the other instruments.

From everything I have read, this is the end of the road for Phil. His health isn't getting better plus he also has diabetes to contend with. His last outing with Genesis is surely it.

It always surprises me how big New Zealand is. It's just a speck nudged up against the side of Australia :)

You have the same problem as we do here. A lot of bands miss Texas for some reason. Genesis were huge here in the 80's and they've not been here since, I guess, 1992ish. I've had to travel to see some of the bands I really wanted to see. A-ha only did 3 shows in Los Angeles, then I found out they added a couple in New York and another at the Hollywood Bowl. I would see them again if they came around.

And yup, I've got surprise tickets to see The (English) Beat during our upcoming European vacation.

Maybe you should save your airmiles :) Lost 80's Live is in August and there's plenty of seats left.

Queen, how the hell did I miss Queen!

I really enjoyed that concert, Adam Lambert stuck the right tone with the audience from the get go, he was there not to replace Freddy but to honor his work... and from the start of the concert everyone was on board.

It always surprises me how big New Zealand is. It's just a speck nudged
up against the side of Australia :)

Not so much nudged up rather 'across the ditch' from them is the local vernacular :)

You have the same problem as we do here. A lot of bands miss Texas for some reason. Genesis were huge here in the 80's and they've not been
here since, I guess, 1992ish. I've had to travel to see some of the
bands I really wanted to see. A-ha only did 3 shows in Los Angeles, then
I found out they added a couple in New York and another at the Hollywood Bowl. I would see them again if they came around.

Seems no matter where we may choose to live, there (the bands) they are not - le sigh..

Oh man, Lambert absolutely nailed it. Like he said, he's not there to replace Freddy, nobody could ever replace Freddy, but to bring his songs alive in such an authentic manner, it was a much better show that I could have imagined. I don't think there was one person walking out who wasn't satisfied.

Well, that's a new one for me. I guess the US and UK have their pond, you can have your ditch.

True. I guess you're in the right place for Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovon and the Rogue Traders :) Wasn't Naked and Famous from that end of the planet?

Agreed and I loved the nice touch when Brian May was out front with his guitar and then Freddy came up on the big screen and there was a short duet.

Yep, it's been that way for many years now.

Not that many come over sadly, it seems we're more likely to get bigs acts from the USA and Europe.

I was about 4 rows from the front and 2 from the catwalk. Me and Brian had a bit of eye contact while I was taking some picutres. They put them up on Brian's webpage for a while. Not sure if they're still there. I got some pretty good ones.

Didn't Steve Hackett come to New Zealand a couple of years ago? That was a great show if you're a Genesis and/or prog rock fan. I've seen him 3 times now and hopefully will get to see Foxtrot at 50.

Same happens here in Arizona (Phoenix)... Large city and metro area, but gets passed over a lot. I wouldn't do June, July or August but most of the rest of the year is nice to really nice.

Fortunately, Vegas is relatively close in terms of near travel. Although the last couple times I was there I absolutely hated it it.

That's just really wierd. I mean, there are definitely racists in the country, but not nearly as many as people seem to think. It's kind of weird how hyper fixated people have become about race/sexuality and how okay it has become to be blatently racist if the target is white men.

Here it was the voters voted about 51% against making MLK a new holiday IIRC they replaced a different holiday with MLK day a couple years late

I don't remember anything about voting, but that may have been to bring
it back. Mecham just did away with it without any kind of vote or
anything. Initially, that is. I'd have to searchy what year that was, but
I'm not on a computer that can do that at the moment :D.
