• What do you listen to while on the Road?

From k9zw@21:1/224 to All on Tue Sep 7 03:37:39 2021
Road Music differs from armchair music, in that it has to compete with road noise, less effective presentation, and usually you just can't listen-deep
into it while being a safe driver.

My main drive has SiriusXM (Satellite) which if you haven't driven with this, is sort of like having a mobible version of Pandora but where someone else curates your channels.

After running through the Decades Channels (40s/50s/60s/70s) and the Band Focused Channels (Tom Petty Channel, Beatles Channel, Grateful Dead Channel...), a stop by the classics (Symphony Hall mostly), I'll end up
playing the Bluegrass Channel because it is something I won't hear elsewhere.

I find the talk radio channels a boring pot of nonesense, and seldom listen
    to them.

Hvaing figured out how to stream through the car's setup, there will be Podcasts on really long drives (last stop Chicago, next Omaha sort of trips).

When on two-wheels I do have in-helmet audio, but seldom listen to anything, and my older cars I don't listen to much, or jab in a vinateg cassette (Blondie, Dire Straights, things that play well over the road noise).

I have some CDs loaded with hard rock stuff in my car. You know, the sort of stuff they play in films when the man character enters a road bar full of Hell Angels. Right now I am burning through Krokus, which is an ACDC-like thing.

Sometimes I go deeper into melodic stuff and play some of Mike Oldfields most melodic works. Or play something from Rhapsody or Turilli because I feel like listening how some Archangel beats Lucipher's ass with a shinning sword.

Most people nowadays have better soundsystems in their cars than at home. My car soundsystem is nothing special but it is still good enough that it pays to play deep music. Try playing one of Turilli's latter albums on one of those 60 bucks speakers kids are using nowadays and you will cry when you realize what the speaker is doing to it. Thankfully I don't have that issue with my car.

Never keeping my main car long enough to warrant a custom install (I change that vehicle every 70,000-90,000 miles (110,000-145,000 km) I listen to what
is installed. This one has an active Bose 14 speaker system with SirusXM, AM/FM, CD and USB/Bluetooth streaming.

As nice sounding as it is, I guess I am old enough to appreciate and run a
good home stereo. Hall-Effect CD to a monster Swiss built amp, to massive Altecs with 15in (24cm) drivers quickly reveals any compromises in the production.

Back to cars, well driven "road music" is always a joy.

The mention of Mike Olfield is interesting, as I find the take-away listening in the car, vs Internet (Pandora via Sonos) and then rendered on my main
    stereo is very different.

A sound engineer explained to me why certain mixes appeal more in the car,
but I'd have to ask him again to share his thoughts.

    Cheers,

    Steve

Anything that rocks. Vanhalen, Stones,ACDC,Tom Petty,Blackfoot,Frampton,The Who,Joe Walsh, Styx (early stuff before the Mr Roboto nonsense). I commute 50 miles one way on my bike when the weather permits and find that music from the 60,70,80.90's gets my blood pumping in all that traffic. On long trips I will listen to Ludachrist that I downloaded as 1 long MP3 song. It is mashup music that is the worst music combined with some of the best. I also give Jaydiohead and Girltalk a listen.

Anything by Devin Townsend. I find when I'm listening to "driving music"
that I can pick anything of his out of my library and *drive*.

Ocean Machine is my favorite. His singing on Steve Vai's "Sex and Religion" woke me up to his talent. "Terria" is an amazing slow driver. All of the
Devin Townsend Project stuff is top notch. Even the Ziltoid the Omniscient
CDs are full of energy if you're driving on an open road.

    Hallo k9zw,

What do you listen to while driving?

On my (pretty short) drive to work, I normally listen to one of the
rock radio stations that I receive via DAB+, it's mostly either "Rock Antenne" or "Radio BOB".
I also often use Spotify with some of my rock/metal oriented
    playlists.

On our trip to our holiday destination (a ~7-8 hour trip) yesterday,
my wife and I also used Spotify with a metal/symphonic metal playlist
and a pop (and other stuff that mostly she likes) playlist.

    Regards,

    Absolutely.

I have just returned back from work by listening to Above the Clouds. It makes me picture a knight fighting a demon withing a burning cathedral for some reason, despite the fact it does nto fit the theme of the music.

I make my own CDs and typically blast them where I can feel the music. I'm on holiday/vacation now and will be returning tomorrow... blasting my music.
The genres are mixed from 60's-today soul to rock to pop.

As a former pro radio guy as well I run the music through various steps of processing to give it that "on air" sound and also to keep the lows above
road noise level. It also adds a different dimension to the sound.

Depends on the platform. I prefer hardware units. On my audio chain that I
ran on 5150fm.net, I had a Yamaha GC2020B that fed into a pair of Orban 424As that I did NOT strap together. Out of that into an Aphex Aural exciter.

I tried a DBX 160 but I was quite disappointed in it's sound.

For my CDs I use the plugins on an older copy of Audacity - I won't upgrade
it due to it's new deliberate lack of security "features".

I can't remember what I used on my automated stream but it was a plugin for Winamp. It had this setting called "FM Magic" that sounded pretty mint! I
used for playlist creation "Amazing Clock Wheel", with a crossfader plugin
and this other one I mentioned.

I use Audacity and Ableton Live here. Depending on what you're doing, they
work in their own way. Audacity because of it's simplicity.

Audacity is pretty simple to use. I've made some nice edits with it as well. The winamp plugin I was trying to think of earlier is Octive Volume Logic.
It has some very nice settings and it's a multi-band compressor not a single band like Audacity.

Actually most pop/rock/r&b music was often mixed down to a cassette or CD and taken out to a car to listen to at the studio since if it sounded good there (where most of the music was listened to) they new they had something. Nowadays

that isn't done as often as most artists want the best sonically sounding recording than can get.
