• Crazy Idea what do think

    From Solaris@21:2/1202 to All on Thu Apr 21 07:12:41 2022
    So im thinking about making a BBS , a stock mystic setup with misc mods that would allow new sysops sysop access to look under the hood and help with modding and net setup , sometimes its easier to see how its done rather then reading how its done,this could be collective board setup kinda like a hands on how to or I could go alone . so do you all think this would be helpfull to new sysops or no , Good bad ugly let me know your thoughts . I would setup a fsx node , leave easter egg notes here and there , prompt mods, menu mods ,
    command line settings for doors , MRC setup and whatever else would be helpful . all users would have 255 sysop access and the system password would be provided and they could go in and poke around . there could also be local message areas that more experienced sysops could leave tricks of the trade messages .... any who just an idea .

    Honestly at first I was thinking how are you going to protect the hardware, or VM if that is what you want to use, then I said it's a great idea! It really is though, there are a TON OF NEW sysOp's running Mystic now, and between here, TQW and Fido the questions are non-stop. If g00r00 were to get involved to an extent with his heavy workload when he is not busy, it could be a way to show new sysOp's an answer to their question. Any help I can provide just ask, I would love to help out.. Kind of like a give back to all of you who have helped me out.. After running this software now for 4 years, (stealing most of SysOp Solaris' ideas) and adding in my own ideas, this is a good way for me to pay it forward.. Count me in!

    I wish I could help you with the Ubuntu side, I set up a test bed of Ubuntu running Mystic at one point last year with the idea I was going to move my BBS from Windows to Ubuntu but never finished the conversion. So, I am still in Windows on my end. Post your issues here, I am sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction, only suggestion I can make (I am just staring to move all of my machines over to Debian 11) is make sure you are using ./ in front of the commands, and also make sure permissions are set correctly. Other then that, I am currently at a loss until I start to play with it more.. Sorry I can't help much..

    Well I basically deleted the semaphores and remade them and it worked. So I can assume 1 of 2 things happened. either messing with it so much corrupted it somehow, or the more likely option I was just so frustrated with it I couldn't see a typo. either way its all finally working! OMG!

    This would be something I would be interested in. I did set up my own instance of Mystic for mucking around on, but it could be helpful to see how others have done things. Being able to log in, and see the code, the settings behind an action I'd like to use would be very useful.

    You would need to vet people carefully though, as I could imagine there are many ways to sabotage the system by getting mystic to run external commands. Be sure to run Mystic under its own user, with only read/write access to the relevant folder.

    Glad you got it fixed.. Reminds me of when I was putting my CNet Amiga BBS online, I was hooking up to the networks and I couldn't get binkd to work properly, so I tried all these different front ends. Still couldn't get it working, finally went back to binkd and screwed around with it for a few hours, still nothing. I had it working 1 way incoming only, I said screw it, killed everything in the outgoing folder and went to bed. Next morning I see messages from my CNet Amiga board on my Mystic!! Something I did corrupted something else.. Glad you got it going though...

    Actually, he could remove the drop to dos command, and anything that would allow any dos interactions.. Another thing he could do is build a base system, make a copy of the folder, and if anything gets mucked up, just delete the mystic folder, and replace it with the backup, if everyone is getting acs 255 from the start it really doesn't matter if you have to log on new each time. Then again, knowing the work Solaris does, he has a plan already in place.. LOL

    Could a user upload a script or binary to the BBS, then enter a menu item which runs that script?

    for example, I could upload to the BBs a script that has
    #!/bin/sh
    rm -rf /mystic/*

    then add a menu item to run an external program, and give the full path of that script.
