Your RLOGIN port is probably below 1024. In order to bind to a low port you have to take special measures with something like setcap to give a program permission to do so, or run it as root.

RLogin uses port 513 by default. On linux only root can open ports below
1024. So if you are using port 513 you'll need to start mis as root or with sudo. I start mis with sudo.

    #sudo ./mis server (or daemon)

    Nonono don't run as root. Run this command;

    sudo setcap 'cap_net_bind_service=+ep' /mystic/mis

You'll have to run it every time you upgrade mis

I think it's safe to run sudo ./mis, although I wouldn't run it as root.

    sudo setcap 'cap_net_bind_service=+ep' /mystic/mis

That's a good option too. I did that with bbbsd so I can start it without needing root or sudo.

I'll give that a shot with mis too and see how it goes.

I think it's safe to run sudo ./mis, although I wouldn't run it as
    root.

It will bind the ports then run as the user that owns the Mystic directory, so perfectly safe to run as root.

    sudo setcap 'cap_net_bind_service=+ep' /mystic/mis

You'll have to run it every time you upgrade mis

That works too, though could be annoying with the high frequency of Mystic upgrades when g00r00's on a roll (like now). :) I use this method for SBBS, but not Mystic.

Yep, I'm pretty sure I did that for bbbsd and tested it but still use sudo
    out of habit. :)

Haha I could add it to my Mystic upgrade script, which does the donkey work of copying the executables and taking backups, before handing things back to me for the manual tweaks of each specific upgrade. That would make it automatic, and then I could change my Mystic startups. No biggie though.

    Happy New Year to you.

We're already in 2019. Happy New Year when you finally catch up. :D

This caused dosemu problems for me. I ended up just giving my bbs linux user permission to bind to privileged ports.

I'm curious - what do you actually back up? And have you tested a full restore/rollback?

I'd like to script this with rsync and avoid copying certain things (like my /mystic/doors directory, or /mystic/files, for example).

That could be another issue too. I haven't used dosemu for a long time. When
I did use it I found that it worked sometimes but not others.

With the setcap command, or do you do it some other way?

Wish I could remember :/ I suppose I could retrace my footsteps
somehow...I've been contemplating writing up a howto for deploying Mystic on
a digitalocean droplet, suppose this could go in there as well.

I backup everything in the Mystic directory

Ah, gotcha. Yeah. That's the easier option insofar as writing a backup script for sure, but in my case, would result in a lot of duplication of things I don't need to duplicate.

My idea is if the SD card goes bad, I'm most likely to lose the lot.

In my case, I'm running in a VM with snapshots (digitalocean) so it's less a case of a compromised file system/hardware and more a case of a botched upgrade. So I'm primarily interested in backing up specifically "mystic"
    things (data directories, binaries, etc).

In my case, the scripts are dual purpose - recover from a botched upgrade, or system mishap. :)

That makes sense, though if so,ething happens to the VM, you could be screwed. :)

It means you're not starting mis as root. You should be starting MIS as root so it can do what it needs to do to start up properly, and then it
    immediately drops root after.
