Hi Danny - I've got it running under dosemu in Ubuntu 18.04 before. Are you using dosemu or is this a different native linux version of BRE?

    Cheers,
    Mike

This is the problem we discussed not long ago of starting mis as root. The
only way to fix this is to start it as the regular user. Don't start as root, it breaks many things, this included.

I had a similar problem when I first started using dosemu. In my case, the mystic directory is owned by a non-priv user called "bbs". If you launch the mis daemon as root initially (for TCP port binding), it subsequently runs as the user owning the mystic directory. I suspect mystic attempts to run dosemu as root, but the "bbs" user does not have access to the root user's home directory to write in the dosemu hidden directory (hence those messages regarding /root above).

I've since started launching the mis daemon as "bbs" instead of root, which seems to correct this problem, as well as some issues with environment variables. When I do this, it uses the dosemu c_drive folder and
user-specific configuration stored in the "bbs" user's home directory.

The only problem is that Linux won't allow you to do this if any of your mis services are using TCP ports lower than 1024. If you are using the default ports, you can use iptables to forward internally to a higher port. Alternatively you can use the set_cap command for mis that was discussed recently in this message area (can get more info on this if you want).

Sorry for the long-winded reply. I hope this is helpful.

    Regards,
    Mike

You can call stty before dosemu to set the console screen layout to something dosemu understands. That may not actually be what's causing it to exit, but it should at least prevent the error from popping up every time a door is run.
eg: stty cols 80 rows 25

I'm not running bre, but a couple of things.

    1. Are you using freedos that comes with dosemu or real dos?
    2. Have you tried running the bre.bat file by hand, or putting a pause in place.
    3. Are you starting mis as root or your bbs user?
